Looking for a rental player on the last year of their contract. Willing to give up our 1st round pick as the main piece. Likely trading partners are non-playoff teams.

    Prefered - #4 RHD
Would also take a 2nd line ~20 goal scorer.

Toronto's 1st rounder will basically be a 2nd rounder next summer, and everyone knows it. Not going to be worth that much on it's own.

Why do you want another winger , exactly? You have a ton of them.

The Leafs should be keeping their 1st round picks , unless it's for a very, very specific player : A young RHD with term on a good contract.

You just added Rasmus Sandin late in the 1st this past June , and he's already a very important prospect for you. That should show you the value of keeping picks , and the cap is only going to get increasingly tighter.

You need to keep the pipeline flowing at all times. A rental 20 goal winger , for a club loaded with offense makes no sense to me.

Keep your damn picks , unless that exact profile of player I mentioned becomes available. If it does , you have the 1st and plenty of intriguing wingers/prospects to use as ammunition.

Ewwww no. Rather keep our pick unless we can get a 2/3 RHD. Petry is neither.

I bet it gets packaged with a prospect+Levio for Panarin. I know people are gonna snicker but thats what high end rentals go for. Roster player=Levio, 1st round pick and prospect(Bracco, Brooks, Grundstrom etc)

No, the Leafs won't move their first for a few months of Panarin.

They're already going to have the best offense in the league.

Adam McQuaid? would throw in Cody McLeod for free

Namestnikov or Vesey also, and they got an extra year for you.

Unless Toronto thinks they can win a cup this year, there is no reason to be in the market for rentals.

if there's a guy that might reasonably be had for a very late 1st with a small plus that the Leafs could use, Petry is it. I'd be good with that if he was out there under the assumption that we don't get best-case scenario performances from Zaitsev and Ozhiganov until the time of the trade which would probably be TDL

I'd like to never trade a 1st round pick, especially for a rental.

Like the poster above mentioned, look how special Sandin looks already and he was picked at 29.

At some point they are going to have to trade a 1st and let's be honest the 2019 1st isn't needed in the slightest

I'm not against keeping it but it's not even remotely needed

Yes, they are needed. Role/auxiliary players need to be replaced internally , and you do that by insuring you draft well. The worst mistake contending teams make is either overpaying role players or trading for them externally and wasting draft capital. Teams do this because they don't have prospects ready to fill holes.

If we use Sandin as an example , you can consider the impact he has on the organization already. The Leafs may not be able to keep Gardiner (just the truth) if their young stars command heavy dollar. If this is the case, then presumably Dermott fills the hole. By doing that, Sandin suddenly becomes a vital piece within the next 2-4 years.

If you just punt 1st round picks for rentals , then you leave yourself devoid of options. When you don't have options , you do dumb things- like overpay for marginal talent.

Again, I'm not anti-trading picks , but it has to be for the right piece. That piece is pretty obvious in regards to the Leafs. There's absolutely no reason to harm your future flexibility because you want to upgrade your third line winger position for a couple months. A move that likely won't move the needle at all and will have future ramifications - even if they're unforeseen.

Unless it's a trade that they can not turn down, I can't see Kyle Dubas trading their 1st round pick. Look at his history in the 2015 draft and most recently the 2018 draft how he likes to trade down with having a 1st round pick.

Petry would be a perfect fit here. Everyone says we need a #1 RHD. Sure. So do most teams. They're nearly impossible to find. You don't need a perfect blue line to win the cup. It's been proven by the Pens and Caps. No more Boyle and Plekanec type rentals please.

Personally I think the Boyle trade worked out better because who knows if Toronto makes the playoffs in 2017 if that trade never happens. I know that offensively Boyle didn't do a lot but considering Tampa Bay finished 1 point behind Toronto for the 2nd Wild Card spot maybe things are different if they never trade for him.

I do agree 100% that the trade for Plekanec was horrible and I think it will go down as one of Lou Lamoriello's worst trades during his time as an NHL GM and a major reason why I was happy that Brendan Shanahan did not renew his contract as the Leafs GM.
