Even if the team just watches Gardiner walk this summer, there are still going to be actual future cap crunches that are going to result in a series of future major trades like it or not. Even if this doesn't happen this summer, it will happen eventually when more youth establishes itself.

Seeing as how we haven't really been in a position to be a buyer, and with the cap this makes a ton of sense. We may see a big move this year, but it would likely only be a rental.

Besides there have been trades to bring in talent. Andersen, Phaneuf and Kessel are all big names we traded for.

Man I hope they either package him up or re-sign him. Walking will sting, but it's probably going to happen

Is it this way for every team... tons of meaningless trades and a few of substance? Or is this just a Leafs thing? I'm not sure what our list looks like vs the average...

Never. We are going to grow old with these guys and only draft picks from our young GM will ever be added to the club.

J/K We will see them all dealt at some point except for Willie, because of that dang promise

Just a situational thing. We may be buyers this TDL or earlier for something more significant. Can't make big trades without giving up something really good (players/picks/prospects). Since we didn't have any real good players to trade and were hoarding prospects and picks...no big trades.

Maybe we go for Doughty at the deadline for Nylander, Gardiner and a 1st (plus another pick or prospect).

I don’t know, but if we could get Doughty by moving out enough cap space to make it work, that would be a major trade to go after.

I would not save Doughty from himself.

Let him stew in the mess he's help make in LA.

Why would you want to bail out the Kings?

Yea, leave Doughty alone. Too much cap hit and cost too much to acquire.

From the news reports I've read, he's played really bad this year. Not sure the price tag will = the value we would be comfortable with.

For whatever reason, some elite stars fall off the cliff at certain point in their career, might be early to say that about him but he has had a bad season.

The suggestions that I've read online that I like are Kronwall, Pietriangelo and Keith.

This season we will pick up a couple defense rental pieces for a Cup run ... in season sign Matty ... after season sign Marner .. then a couple trades to bolster 3rd line next summer ... we have the major pieces here so next 3-5 years it will be adds and deletes to improve the roster and young D taking hold on spots

The big trades were to get rid of Dion, Kessel and bring in Andy. Then we truly started the rebuild where making big trades doesnt really make sense until you get a full understanding of how the project pool/future core is shaping up.

However with the leafs likely to be cup contenders for the next while I expect in the next 2-3 years we will pick up a top 4D or gritty top 6 forward with a few years of term.

The final piece so to say of a cup winning team.

IIRC, the Gilmour trade is still the largest (# of players) in NHL history all these years later. In the current era, the entry draft is the more likely place to land the big time piece. There still has been - and will continue to be - notable trades, most of which have been mentioned here. However, substantial is going to be a subjective term. I'd vote yes.

As a painter, would you sell your work before it's completed?
As a architect, would you sell your plans before they're done?
As a GM of the Leafs, would you trade before you know how your complete team is playing after 2/3 games?

Let's see what we've got before we pull the ripcord.
