Proposal: Toronto - Phoenix

To Leafs:
Lawson Crouse
2nd round pick

To Coyotes:
Travis Dermott

Coyotes have been looking to trade OEL. They get an up and coming, dependable D to play with Chychrun. Leafs get a little bit of grit and truculence in the lineup along with a pick to even things out.

I beg to differ, he's a future top pairing dman. Phoenix likely wins this trade in the medium to long term. They aren't looking to have another 5 year rebuild and will need the defensive help once they trade OEL. This trade is a necessity for Phoenix, which needs to be noted.

Arizona needs to be harder to play against, so they trade the young guy who plays hard, skates fast, PKs and scored 15 in a shortened season and their only pick in the top 90 the last two years for a defenseman that the Leafs who need help on defense are peddling?
I doubt it...

Dermott is worth more but plays LD which the leafs are overflowing with. I'd do the trade but only from a needs perspective.

Leafs have added Brodie and Lehtonen. Dermott can be let go for the right price. Phoenix needs D once OEL departs more than they need Crouse

Arizona already has a Dermott. His name is Jordan Oesterle.

Not interested in your sheltered D.

It looks like OEL declined to be traded, so why do they need Dermott behind OEL, Chychrun, and Goligoski bad enough to trade the thing their GM keeps saying they need more of? Also, they are at the cap, and Toronto is over it. So it's probably a pretty ugly looking set of circumstances to try to make that trade.

I'm a leaf fan and Crouse would be an ideal bottom 6 to add. Plays w an edge, has some skill and cheap cap. Dermott has the advantage of years of control but unless they actually deal a dman this doesn't seem to fill a need.

Dermott isn't even a 2nd pairing guy and is unlikely to get there. That's why Leafs fans are offering him around. Easily replaceable player for most every team.

Crouse, not so much.

Dermott's fine and he's got time to get better. It's entirely possible that he becomes a more valuable player than Crouse. It just doesn't make sense. Especially when he doesn't have a contract and probably wants a nice raise. And when the Coyotes and Leafs are both trying to get harder to play against and shed cap.

He crushes 3rd pairing competition but you're right he's not a proven top 4 asset. Whether he gets there or not, who knows. Rather have Crouse having said all that.

No it's because Dermott is a natural LD and unlike Brodie very rarely if ever plays RD.

Currently Dermott is the #4 LD behind Rielly Muzzin and Sandin

That's why he's available

And Ryan Murray is with a 5th. Dermott might have had more value pre covid but times, they are a changin.

The cap hits would be pretty close probably so dump the 2nd and do a one for one hockey trade. Idk if Arizona would want or need Dermott and they also might not want to get rid of Crouse.

Removing the 2nd rounder,

it really depends what your rationality is. If you like analytics, you will think the trade favors arizona. If you like hits, physical play, and then the trade favors toronto.

murray does have massive injury concerns, which is what depressed his value. He also had a 4.6mil cap hit. Dermott is 2.5 years younger and can slide into the 2nd pairing of a rebuilding/retooling team. He’s expected to have a Bridge cap hit of 2-3mil.

Analytics should be and are valued more than whether or not a guy can hit.

With that said, Leafs need a guy that can hit, and they also have a glut of talented LD; so the trade works for them. However, the 2nd needs to be coming back from Phoenix, otherwise it's too lopsided.
