The fact its an AHL and not NHL contracts speaks volumes of a 21 year old CHL overager, who has been passed over in 3 entry drafts.

Expectations need to be tempered accordingly.

Lets see how he looks in the pro world now, and then reassess the situation.

You have to love his size and his finishing ability coming out of junior, but his skating leaves a lot to be desired at this point.

Such a low risk move. Whether or not Brazeau plans out, these are such smart signings. I do love that the guy has size and is a goal scorer. 100 goals in his last 136 OHL games....the guy can find the back of the net. Let's just remember to temper our expectations and let a guy like this marinate for 2 or 3 years with the Marlies and see what he can become. Best of luck Justin!

I wonder if all these posters criticizing the kid's skating has actually seen him play or just regurgitating popular opinion?
Barb underhill spotted a flaw they can work on this summer
it's a project but maybe he can get better
maybe he can get in
an AHL GAME just to see

Wonder if he could become a PP specialist type? Park him in front of the net and see what happens, other than that, 4th line duties.

Not sure it it's been mentioned yet, but the Leafs are basically paying Brazeau what he'd be making with the Marlies on an ELC anyways except he doesn't take up a contract slot.

Engvall and Timashov are making $70,000 in the minors according to cap friendly.

We had a better version of this player in Josh Leivo and let him go for nothing. Shaking my head.

Remember back in November when the Leafs were on 120 point pace with 925,000 Leivo. Then they signed 7m Nylander and as you suggest gave Leivo away because they need a roster spot for 6 goal scorer Nylander.
Worse move in the NHL this season (and the future), signing Nylander to that contract, which led to the overpayment of Matthews, and who know what will happen Marner, Kapanen, and Johnsson.
Admitting the brain trust of the total Leafs management knows more than me, but gee seems like the Leafs have set themselves up for hometown "premium" contracts.

Quoted for truth.

While I still would have wanted this signing if we still had Leivo, we absolutely crapped the bed with Leivo.

Got nothing for him, and he would have been exactly the kind of 4th line player we needed for the playoffs. A 4th line of Leivo-Gauthier-Ennis would be a complete line that could forecheck and score and not be a defensive liability.

That was one of the scenarios where Babcock's stubbornness went against what was best for the team.

Rant over, the ship has sailed, and I'm happy Leivo is making the most of his chance in Vancouver. He deserves a shot.

I really wish people would stop exaggerating Leivo's contribution.

In 75 games this season he has 14 goals and 24 points

In Vancouver with top line minutes and #1 PP he scored at a 17 goal and 30 point pace. He isnt much of a power forward either.

Why people think that Barb can turn a bad skater into a good skater is beyond me. She can change his stride and skate recovery position and body mechanics but if he has bad feet there is no cure. I have not seen him skate but if it is technically reasons for his skating then he can improve. Him being a big boy could be the season for his poor skating and maybe more strength in his legs and a change in technique could change him into an adequate skater. But expectations need to be termpered as if Barb could help Finn would be a NHL player as he had all the tools but bad feet killed him.

Barb is well known for helping turn Brian Boyle from a dreadful skater to a half decent one.

Yeah, he's most likely nothing. But it doesnt hurt to give him a shot with the Marlies.

He contributed very strong board work, finished checks, didn't back up from confrontation and would fight, chipped in points, stuck it out and never complained before the team got good, all for under a million dollars. Especially based on the last point, he WAS an important contributor.

Not at all it costs us nothing. However he can sign with an NHL team at anytime as he is still a free agent.

Of an nhl team signs him, does it work like waivers? So they’d have to keep him on the nhl roster or can they sign him to a nhl deal and send him to their ahl affiliate?

Did you read what I wrote.

I stated that Barb can help with technique which includes body positioning and skate recovery postion. Stride length etc but there is no cure for bad feet as it is genetics.

Yes, I in fact read what you wrote. Please reread your first sentence, instead of being so aggressive with your response.

Yes they can sign him to a ELC and place him in the minors I believe.

If any team offers Brazeau an NHL contract, the Leafs must release him from their AHL contract, AND the leafs have the choice to match the ELC offer.

Nothing ng to worry about in regards to teams pawning him off of us.
