I don't really think Franson is going to be hard to sign. He's an RFA next year with arbitration rights...he will most likely get the long term deal he wants IF he proves that he can be as effective over an 82 game season.

Why would the Leafs hesitate in signing a player that has gotten better every year under them? The Leafs played hardball but if the Leafs want him back, he'll be back. It's part of the business.

And still lots of cap space! Where is everyone who said it couldn't be done?

Yeah...I completely forgot about that:

Raymond, Ranger and Franson cost us 4M. Wow :amazed: 3 NHL players...one who is a top 4 D, another who can be a top 4D and a top 6-9 tweener that plays good defensively.

Ladies and gentleman, we finally have a GM that knows how to work the cap.

Good stuff and he basically got what he was proposing all along, a 1 year bridge contract but probably for a lot less, than he wanted in salary.

If it wasn't for that horrendous Clarkson contract, he'd be a golden capologist.

Ugh. Hopefully nonis plans on flipping him. He is so not worth the headache. Can't wait till next years Cody training camp holdout.

I'll give him a break on that one. It was his first UFA acquisition as GM for the Leafs. I like Clarkson but he's worth about as much as Bickel (~4-4.5M).

Cap increases + buyouts of guys like Armstrong, Tucker not on the cap + One of Reimer/Bernier definitely not on the team should mean that we won't have any problem signing all our players.

Either way. He will only get a high dollar amount id he has a huge year. If he doesn't the Leafs have leverage again.

No 13th forward for 10 games would be a little weird though.

Gotta give Nonis credit for knowing his job here. You can like or dislike what he did this offseason and for a while there I was nervous that he'd recklessly put himself in a jam he couldn't easily get out of, but with it all said and done he knew who he had to pay and who he had leverage to squeeze and he executed his plan as well as he could. I still disagree with parts of the plan, but that's very different from a month or two ago when I thought he might've screwed up his own plan.

What about Brennan. He has been decent through camp.

Pretty much seals the fact that Morgan Reilly is going back to junior which is great!

Almost like Nonis had a plan all along.

To enter the season over the salary cap?

That plan's succeeded all right.

If they manage to trade Liles without retaining salary I'll retract my criticism but I can't say I'm enamoured with how Nonis has managed the cap thus far.

edit: Hopefully this means Reilly's going back west. I'm shocked and appalled so many are in favour of keeping him here, it's like they've never heard of Gary Nylund, Luke Richardson, Jim Benning, Bob McGill, Al Iafrate, Luke Schenn, etc.

Nonis wins again guys.

Some can complain about a couple of the moves he's made thus far but damn has the guy done some fantastic work with contracts in the last month.

This is really the most fair for all sides. Franson takes less than what he's probably worth, but on a short term that allows him to cash in. Hopefully this keeps him hungry to have a big year

Haha yeah because it's completely his fault Komisarek, Grabo and Liles were/are making 5mil plus on immovable contracts.
