Toronto is in a very scary position right now (looking at PPG)

Toronto, Ontario
Only hope is if Matthews line continues playing like this similar to that of Mack and Rantanen last year. If they do that, they could carry this team to the playoffs. I hope to see a lot of Tavares with Miky as well.

If,

Florida beats Boston
Montreal beats Columbus
Pittsburgh beats NYR

Toronto drops to 3rd wild card spot

The only one that didn’t happen is NYR winning in OT and worse case happened as all three games were three pointers.

The Leafs must find a way to get 1 point in the next 3 and ideally get 2 or more. Boston may be the easiest game they have this week.

Toronto is digging one hell of a hole

Tonight only Ottawa is playing in their division so all teams above and below will be handed another game in hand to catch up if Toronto cannot win against NYI

And so the road trip beings

edit: just to put things into perspective

Here are the teams below Toronto right now and how many games in hand each have,
Carolina (1)
Buffalo (2)
Tampa (4)
NYR (3)

And all those numbers go up 1 after tonight

Toronto has 22pts right now
NYR has 18pts
NYR are 6th in the wild card race

That is HOW BAD Toronto is doing right now

it doesnt matter what there spot in the standings , its totally deceiving. sure tampa is 4 points back but have 4 games in hand i think its safe to assume they will get more than 4 points in 4 games. ...........

toronto needs to go on a run because it doesnt look good. ... they are 11th in the east at PPG .

Playoffs still starting in 5 months?

They got to get there.

I like watching the playoff races this early because it gets me interested in games I wouldn’t normally tune into.
There is also a stat about Thanksgiving and playoff spot implications where something like 75-80% of the teams that hold a spot at at the point actually keep it.

Alot of experts say the next 9 games will be a MAJOR FACTOR in determining the leafs fate
Most say at the very least 5-4
We ll see
Pittsburgh played without Malkin

Deep in the Purple jungles of BC
Mumbo jumbo , that’s all this is ...

Our PP is sour due to many factors such as

lazy , diagramed practiced zone entries
Stationary options at the blue line
Predictable , defensible entry
Stationary options inside the zone
Familiar setup that looks diagramed
Refusal to go naturally with a free style approach
Over coached
Not enough on the fly play
Not enough quick passing
Wrong positioning
To tight of a set up
Not spreading the opposition enough
Not enough shots from the point
Don’t have a big shot from the point
Marner should not be shooting one timers
Marner should be on the point high
Need big body in front of the net

in other words a complete overhaul of the power play and let them have their natural talents free flow in the zone

I would leave AM on the Pp for the entire duration in many different areas through out it ...( he’s not on PK so he would be ok .

I don't think I can recall a time when our record was "okay", but our fanbase was so negative.

So all of those games in hand now jump by one with tonight's loss

Fun fact, if Carolina, Buffalo, Tampa win only 50% of those games in hand they will have more points then Toronto
If NYR win 50% of their games in hand they will be tied with Toronto

.550 point percentage after this loss tonight... on pace for 90 points. 96 points missed last season.

So tomorrow is going to be a TERRIBLE day for Toronto. No matter what Toronto will no longer be in a playoff spot

Carolina vs Buffalo:
Carolina wins Toronto is in the 3rd WC spot
Buffalo wins Toronto is tied with Buffalo with 22pts but since Buffalo has more regulation wins (and has 2 games in hand) they should be above Toronto in the standings
worst case scenario,
Buffalo OT win will drop Toronto to 4th wild card spot

NYR vs Tampa: Won't impact todays standing, just hope it doesn't go to OT

moneypuck is now giving Toronto a 22% chance of making the playoffs. only the Rangers, LA, Ottawa, and Detroit have worse odds, which is some great company

Last year, for the most part, Edmonton was only 4-6pts out of a playoff spot, the issue was there were like 5-6 other teams ahead of them in the standings. Ultimately Edmonton crumbled when they realized they were not going to make it and picked decently high. Toronto is in this exact same situation

But..BUT STL was in last place and they were able to win it last year. Ya, the odds of something like that happening again are so slim and the odds of that happening in B2B years is next to impossible. There are just too many teams ahead of Toronto for Toronto to have any chance of making it into the playoffs

I truly believe the season is over

edit: Here is what Toronto is up against,

Toronto has 30pts

Tampa has 5gms in hand (29pts)
Rangers have 4gms in hand (29pts)
Florida has 3gms in hand (31pts)
Buffalo has 2gms in hand (31pts)
Montreal has 2gms in hand (30pts)
Columbus has 3gms in hand (26pts)

Besides Columbus (who will have to go on a 3 game winning streak) every single one of those teams is ahead of Toronto.

I am with you. I don't see the character on this roster like the Blues had/have. Its night and day.

I felt this COL game was the make it or break it. The coach went all in, Freddie in back to back, running three lines, lots of ice time for 91 and 34 split up Rielly and Ceci. Still didn't get it done. The team knew this was a big game. The effort was there, but way too many stupid plays with the puck.

Wonder what moves get made now.

Just to agree with you more, they need to play at a .635 pace to just hit 96 points. So disappointed... maybe the most disappointing season I can remember.
