They also gained the flexibility to start using LTIR today if they need to (which they did need to make other signings official while risking an offer-sheet vulnerability) instead of after Marner signs.
I thought LTIR only kicks in on the first day of the regular season.

We had to eat Clarkson's contract to get a 4th rounder ? Or was it to get someone to take Sparks?

Explanation is somewhere in this thread, but basically this is a cap move so we have room to sign Mitch if his holdout runs on into the season. Cap flexibility with the fringe benefits of ridding ourselves of Sparks and getting a 4th.

Facts about this trade:

a) It gave the Leafs flexibility to go into LTIR before Mitch was signed. Hence it enabled them to make that bulk of signings official just after Clarkson was signed. Now that Clarkson is here, the Leafs could make those signings official AND sign Mitch without losing LTIR efficiency. Once a team knows they are going to go into LTIR before season starts, more LTIR contracts don’t hurt on the cap
b) It only cost Leafs $200k in real dollars due to final year being $1m salary and the contract being 80% insured
c) Leafs get a 4th

It’s only wins for Leafs in this, aside from absorbing some pocket change.

Sparks is not really a factor.

So without signing Clarkson the leafs can’t make the bulk of signings official and can not sign marner?

Not quite. They would HAVE to sign Marner before the season starts without the Clarkson contract. Now they have flexibility to sign Marner after training camp.

yeah, basically taking away another perceived leverage point for Marner. Marner's camp banking on the leafs having to sign him before season starts and therefore have leafs over a barrel, this trade takes away that from marner camp. Does Marner have any leverage left? I mean besides he is a fantastic player? he has no leverage for an overpay left really

Being a fantastic player is pretty damn good leverage.

Better start to last pre-season... Sparksy with 5-0 shutout with VGK
He was kinda thrown to the wolves last season and had some tough luck with concussion, starts against tough teams on back to back, etc.
Wouldn’t be surprised if he amounts to a quality backup eventually.

He got a shutout in his first NHL game too! I hope he does well in Vegas. It clearly didn't work out here for him, unfortunately.

He cleared waivers actually. My prediction McBackup-the old guy-would still be in the NHL while Sparkles tends in the Swiss League looks more likely.
