Looks like that's the last of the 2015/16 teams. It was a good run but this move had to be made as Pillar is simply not a good player besides some good catches here and there. At least the Jays know they need to tank and rebuild, rather than just haplessly treading water in the .500 range with a bunch of washed-up players on their roster

EDIT: From the 2015-16 teams, there's still Smoak who's actually become a pretty decent player who can become a good trade piece at the TD, Travis who spends more time on a hospital bed then the baseball field, and the Stroman/Sanchez duo who are likely to be shipped off within the next 12 months or so

"get something for travis!"

what, pray tell, do you think they're going to get for a 28 year old who is not an everyday player and hasn't been a good player in two years? literally anyone would be better and might be able to stay upright for more than 103 games.

Giants sucks. Almost bad as ORIOLES.

Pillar, Shark, Parra, Longoria, Melancon, Sandoval, Dyson, Holland, Pomeranz... Is this 2014? What's the point of so much washed up players when they are bottom 5 team in the league. Meh prospect pool, too.
The mess was inherited for the most part. And as you said, the Giants poll is uninspiring at the moment, so they had to bring in vets on short-term deals to fill the void.

The bay area isn't a great area to tank. People have the A's, 49ers, Raiders (for now), Warriors, Sharks, and Earthquakes to spend money on if the Giants want to get bad before they get better. This isn't an area that can get away with it, like others with fewer to no other options. Giants have to tank without giving the illusion of tanking to keep those giraffe hat wearing, panda-loving dollars coming in and butts in the seats.

Pillar was just the start? Are you sure?

He was one of the few vets they had left from those playoff rosters.

And I don't blame the Jays' woes on Shapiro and Atkins. Sure there have been some missteps with regards to cutting ties with other players but I don't even think the best management team in baseball could turn this year's Jays into contenders. Gonna be a while, and Pillar was an asset in decline.

Again, zero issue with the move.

It's all about the opportunity cost of keeping a player one year too long to maximize their value. Selling Pillar one year earlier as they should have done, would have given Shatkins more return. This has happened with a few players on the Jays. This may very well lead to future woes with the club - fewer prospects means a lower probability of success in the future.
