Since everyone likes to complain and say Crosby took a discount here are the cap% for some of the big name players 2nd(or 3rd in new CBA) contracts:

Crosby 17.3% 5 years
McDavid 16.67% 8 years
Malkin 15.34% 5 years
Eichel 13.33% 8 years
Matthews 14.63% 5 years
Stamkos 11.66% 5 years
Kucherov 11.95% 8 years
Kane 11.09%, 5 years. 2nd 15.22% (New CBA) 8 years
Perry (3rd contract new CBA) 13.41% 8 years
Drai 11.33% 8 years
Tarasenko 10.27% 8 years
Kuznetsov 10.4% 8 years

Im not saying that AM contract is good. He got paid full market value at a reduced term without giving up many UFA years. The contract sucks for the leafs. But people need to stop saying Sid took a discount and comparing it to AM and others.

If this was me at the 4pm conference:

ME: Matty, you said you didn't want to sign the 8 year deal, because the money was too much?

AM: Yes, this is correct

ME: The reports are saying with inflation, and McDavids 12.5m contract, you would have been close to 14m on a 8 year?

AM: Yes, correct

ME: McDavid has won a hart, Lyndsey, and 2 art ross, how is this a comparable?

AM: .......... OK folks, that's enough questions.

After the 20/21 season the nhl will be getting a new TV deal in USA... with the way sports is getting money... expect the next USA deal to massively push the cap up

how many of those contracts only buy out 1 UFA year?

How badly do the Leafs get screwed up if there is a lockout? If Marner signs you figure it's going to have a similar bonus structure. 30+ million in bonuses during a lockout has to wreck an organization.

Appreciate the work you did, but without the context of term on those deals it really doesn't provide a fair picture

I'm a little new to contract discussion, so can someone clear this up for me? Why is everyone saying they'd be ok with this money on an 8-year contract, but not a 5-year? Don't players usually take higher AAV on a shorter contract, and lower AAV on a longer contract? Because on the longer one, they'll get more money guaranteed to them, so they're willing to take a lower AAV?

Isn't the same AAV on a longer contract worse for the team? Or are people banking on AM being insanely good in 5 years and therefore demanding a huge pay raise to stay with the Leafs, so they'd rather have him locked up for longer at 11.6?
8 year deals eat up more UFA years which are usually more expensive compared to RFA years. This deal IMO at least is expensive for 1 UFA year bought. For an 8 year deal this would have been great for the Leafs. Again IMO!

a 5 year deal gives Matthews the opportunity to cash-in on a big deal again at 27. He'll be in his 'prime years', maybe even at his peak, and the cap will likely be a lot higher. So, the contract he signs at 27 will likely be more expensive and include years that AM's play starts to deteriorate (aged 30 onwards.... this is usually the norm for players with obvious exceptions)

hypothetical:
option 1) the Leafs locked him for 8 years at age 21-29 @ 13M. Leafs get a guaranteed rate through all of AM's prime/peak
option 2) Leafs lock him up for 5 year @ 11.634M and Matthews has the opportunity to net a very lucrative deal that'll be all UFA years at age 27. If it's a long-term deal it'll probably include years AM's play begins to deteriorate - again it'll likely be at a higher cap hit due to it being all UFA years and the cap hit being larger. There is also the risk that AM explores the market and walks too at 27.

this is how i perceive things, at least

Malkin and Crosby's were both 5 year deals for sure

they signed 12 year contracts lol, which is what you want for a player like that

and their shorter contract still made them RFA

this 5 year deal is just marginally better than a 4 year contract which will never happen unless Matthews is the GM
