Read had a good first 2.5 years with the Flyers, then got progressively worse each season. He's likely a tweener now that will spend most of the rest of his career in the AHL (or Europe if he decides to go there...which I expect him to eventually)

it's a pto. Competition is good at camp. Somebody will fight hard enough for a job and keep fighting to keep it. That's a good thing for our bottom 6 guys.

Makes sense. Fills a need as a guy who can play 10 minutes, P.K., and not get scored on.

Read has very good defensive advanced stats, so he can probably help them out on the lower lines if his PTO is successful.

A PTO in Toronto holds value. You get to play on HNIC where other teams can get a good look at you as well.

It's unlikely he gets an NHL contract from the Leafs (simply due to the amount of contract space the Leafs have left) but he'll be on national television and hopefully get a chance somewhere.

I have a pretty bad memory, but wasn't he so good for the Flyers in his first year that people even thought he might win the Calder?

Guy has to flat out win a spot in camp. unlikely but maybe he gets signed on an AHL deal. 47 pts last year total in the AHL.

He's not showcasing himself only to Toronto. There are other teams scouting him too so even if he can't win a spot in Toronto some other team might sign him.

Weird we’re at 49 contracts with Marner unsigned. We have Neuvirth who will likely get a contract and him on a PTO. Leafs will likely make some moves before the season

He was an older guy out of college and in every way ready to play in the NHL, so his first season was impressive for most rookies but it was pretty much also his ceiling. He ended up 4th in Calder voting that year.
