.... We basically robbed him blind last year with contract negotiations. He opted out of arbitration. He held out. And we still only gave him $1 million. He has paid his dues... you aren't going to keep a defenseman of Franson's calibre if you don't compensate him accordingly.

I don't think he'll sign for that much. Montreal wanted Franson and they were in salary dumping mode. Don't forget Gorges, the guy being dealt for Cody was making about 4 million himself.

Pretty sure arbitration hearings don't care about the player's role going forward but what he has accomplished to this date and past comparable with similar games played and results will be used.
What they've accomplished will impact their roles going forward. If Reimer was a better goalie, they wouldn't have acquired Bernier. If Franson was a better defenseman there would be less need to bring in both Robidas and Polak. Etc..

I'm sure the Leafs won't have any problem using Reimer's high GAA, poor win-loss record down the stretch, low start #s overall and how often he was pulled.

$11 million for Gardiner, Reimer, and Franson.

Gardiner should sign a bridge deal. 2 years at $2 million per year.

Reimer is a Good Guyâ„¢ and will take a discount to keep playing with the Leafs. What a Good Guyâ„¢. 1 year deal at $2 million per year.

That leaves $7 million for Franson. Give Franson 6 years at $4.5 million per year (heavily front-loaded, with millions in signing bonuses).

That leaves us with $2.5 million of cap space breathing room, which should help cover call-ups and injuries throughout the year.

Joffrey Lupul ($5.250m) / Tyler Bozak ($4.200m) / Phil Kessel ($8.000m)
James Van Riemsdyk ($4.250m) / Nazem Kadri ($2.900m) / Matt Frattin ($0.800m)
Leo Komarov ($2.950m) / Mike Santorelli ($1.500m) / Peter Holland ($0.775m)
Carter Ashton ($0.851m) / Petri Kontiola ($1.100m) / David Clarkson ($5.250m)
Troy Bodie ($0.600m) / Trevor Smith ($0.550m) /
DEFENSEMEN
Jake Gardiner ($2.000m) / Dion Phaneuf ($7.000m)
Morgan Rielly ($0.894m) / Stephane Robidas ($3.000m)
Petter Granberg ($0.800m) / Roman Polak ($2.750m)
Korbinian Holzer ($0.788m) / Cody Franson ($4.500m)
GOALTENDERS
Jonathan Bernier ($2.900m)
James Reimer ($2.000m)

ummm..

I'd rather give Gardiner term than Franson. If we could get Gardiner at $3.75M-$4M for 6 years I'd do it in a second. With that said, I bet they settle at somewhere between $2.5M and $2.8M on a two year term and reopen that in two years.

But really, Franson is done as a Leaf. He might make it to camp, but as soon as the Leafs see equitable play from a Granberg/Percy type he'll be gone for picks.

And I'd bet real money Reimer ends up going to arbitration/settling that day and getting pretty close to what Bernier is getting ($2.5M-$2.7M). They have shockingly similar career numbers.

Reimer - 140 gp - 65-48-15 .914 pct 2.85 gaa
Bernier - 117 gp - 55-39-13 .918 pct 2.51 gaa

I think advantage goes to Reimer if this actually gets to a hearing and I'm sure the Leafs know that too.

The numbers were looking good until I saw Franson 6 years @ 4.5 - uh, no.

Just.

No.

I can see some upside in Holland for sure.
Didn't like trading Blacker for him at the time but I don't know ****.

Also could have seen him get $1.5 so nice deal!

I also wasn't thrilled about the cost to get Holland, but Blacker needed a fresh start, he wasn't even a top6 dman for the Marlies at that point.

I agree that he definitely could have gotten over $1m on a 1 yr deal, so if he can prove he is an NHL regular, this looks like a very good contract.

i think the leafs are happy to walk away. the best thing about franson and arbitration is that they wont need to commit long term to him. even if he gets every penny he is asking for it will only be for one year. i assume he is looking for $3.5-4.5 million. given we have the cap space im sure the leafs will keep him and hope he has a good year and they can move him for a 2nd rounder.

the problem with franson is that i dont think he is the right guy the leafs should be locking up in the top 4. assuming phaneuf, gardiner, and rielly are our future top 4, the last spot would hopefully be someone a little better at....ya know defense.

2-way means nothing, it has nothing to do with waivers, it just means that they will earn different salaries based on being in the AHL or NHL.

I know he didn't need waivers last year, not sure on this year now.

I know that, im just hoping for his sake that it's a 1way so if uncle randy buries him he will at least get his full salary

Toronto Maple Leafs centre Peter Holland scores new contract, hole-in-one on same day

Holland’s contract might better equate to a birdie. It’s the first one-way deal of his NHL career after 17 points in his first 68 games.

What a shame it would be to lose Franson.....

It would be actually.

The Maple Leafs have done a really good job of miscasting just about every one of our defenders.

Franson is what he is.... a powerplay specialist who can provide you with an offensive spark.

Would you prefer to pay him $3M+ for that?

When you consider the fact that most UFA Defenseman go for $3-5 million on the open market, I would pay that for a 27 year old.

Consider what Randy Carlyle has done to pretty much all of our decent possession players while they were here to how they have done after they left. Franson has definitely slipped possession wise since he got here, but given the lack of mobility on the back-end outside of Gardiner/Rielly it would be nice to keep him at that amount.

Leafs have 3 players now Holland, Kontiola and Santorelli competing for 2 spots at center at #3 and #4C this year.

Who do you think will take those spots and who will be the odd man out?

I want to lose Franson for good value. I didn't think we got fair value for gunner at all.

All 3 will play, one will move to wing.

I think both Kontiola and Santorelli, can play the wing and it wouldn't be bad having extra centers, that can be available, especially should another injury happen, like the one Bolland had.

Nothing wrong with depth but I was asking who will claim those center spots?. Center is a more skilled position and most if not all players could move out of the middle to the wing, whereas few players can move successfully from the wing to center ice.

Is Holland better than Kontiola and Santorelli or will he be the odd man out at C position. Only 2 of the 3 prior to injures will play their natural positions.

Do Leaf fans expect Holland to beat out his challengers for the position, and if so will it be for the 3rd line or 4th line where he ends up?

Well I would guess that will be decided somewhat in training camp but I would suspect Holland will be one center and since both Kontiola and Santorelli, are signed to one year deals, Holland is likely being groomed, to be the Center going forward.

It depends on preseason, especially how Frattin does. If Frattin plays well in preseason I think he'll play with Lupul and Kadri. If not I think it'll be:

JVR Bozak Kessel
Lupul Kadri Santorelli
Komarov Kontiola Frattin
player Holland goon
