Im glad Connor gets another crack at an NHL roster, 6th rounder or not im happy the guy has another chance to prove himself. He never cheated us for effort and despite the fact i did think he was the odd man out here i respect and appreciate the effort and hope he can turn it around (or just turn it on , hes only 24).

gud luk.

I actually had really high hopes for Carrick. I thought he had a decent shot at a top 4 guy here, but he never really progressed during his time (not that he had a ton of opportunity, but he never forced Mike to play him even when opportunity was a-knockin'). He also carried none of his AHL scoring touch to the NHL.

Sorry to see him go, and wish him the best.

Also, I agree with others here - I don't see the "small" narrative making much sense. He's no hulk on skates, but he had a good size and was scrappy.

Dubas believed when he resigned Carrick this summer that he was part of the solution to improve Leafs defense and now he was willing to toss him away of waivers before securing a late round pick.

Now what?

Feels almost like we had him as a 6-7 and with the level of uncertainty Carrick asked to be thrown back in the pond. That's not insider stuff, but it is my gut feeling on him. I think he knew teams were interested and he had a better chance to see the ice elsewhere, being the smart man that he is, it's a no brainier.

Same applies to Leivo but he lacks the body of work to do similar.

This guy is like literally the same size as Dermott: 5'11", 195-200 lbs. Carrick is actually more physical than Dermott as well, so he should even get the edge.

The problem with Carrick is that he did not do the small things well enough. Decent but not amazing at ES. If he knew how to PK, he'd probably stick around or even be in the top 6. However defensemen, especially bottom pairing defensemen, who do not know how to do special teams are limited in their effectiveness. Just like on the other way, being a strong special teamer gives you a lot more rope, much like it does for Gardiner, Hainsey and Polak getting the ice time they did.

Ozhiganov knows how to PK. Dermott knows how to PK and should be starting to do it more in the NHL (they'll probably rotate him, Oz, Rielly, Zaitsev and Hainsey). Polak knew how to PK. Even Holl and Marincin know how to PK, and Marincin is very good at it. Carrick did not, and now look who is on the outside looking in?

no no no
you are right and so are the "too small" guys.

"too small" in the sense , that our decision makers feel we need more "size, weight"
however one wants to term it. CC was the least useful of our "small guys"

6th,7th,8th D all above 6 ft
13th forward above 6 ft.

C'mon Mess. You don't fully believe this, do you? Obviously Carrick was signed as a potential option to stay with the big club and then dumped as soon as it became clear that Ozhiganov was a step above (with Holl and Marincin also being favoured over him, which shows you how they viewed his performance in training camp). The defense can [and I believe will] be improved but camp is a time for assessment along with first looks at any new players in the organization, and [if anything] trading Carrick shows that they are not happy with this level of player as a fixture in our Top 6. Which is a good thing.

Must be for a low pick. Oh well, good luck in Dallas, Connor! I was a fan
Stars fan here.

From what I’ve heard, for the most part, he sounds like a good pick-up. Even when our injured d-man gets back Carrick looks to have that 7th spot, which was Polaks. By the way you can take Polak back as well if you’d like.

Lou doesn't work here anymore. Call NYI.

But you guys should like Carrick, a right side of Klingberg,Honka,Carrick is actually really nice.

Im getting amused by Stars fans telling me how much better Carrick is going to be then Polak. Like do they not realize both of them played here last season?

I mean, I liked Carrick quite a bit when he first got here, but there was nothing that seperated him from Polak last season.

Would have kept him over Marincin. But it's just the 7/8 position so no big deal. At least we got a pick out the waiver deadline. Good luck to him. He had good physicality for a smaller framed player, jumped into the lineup with some degree of efficiency. Gets a chance with another team for being a gud pro for us.

Everything separated him from Polak except PK. That's more a damnation of Polak than praising Carrick who was simply a good bottom pair option.

Carrick was better positionally and at reading plays. He's better with the puck and able to jump up in their lineup if needed whereas Polak was basically a PK specialist who we suffered through the rest of the time because Hainsey/Zaitsev were overworked on the PK.

Polak was also more physical and better defensively. Carrick was better with the puck on his stick, but his defensive IQ and being able to shut out guys was nowhere near Polak's ability.

He was more physical, but not better defensively. People often associate and confuse the two.

Polak was regularly taken out of position trying to be physical. He was always chasing and losing inside positioning because of it, which caused a lot of chances.

Theyre also about to ready to build a statue of Roman Polak outside the arena right now!

Give it time and theyll see why we moved on from those RHD when we are already so weak there.

But I do wish them both the best, as theyre great character people!

I think Carrick under a different coach will flourish, wish him the best in Dallas. Not a shot at Babs, but just seemed like the two were on different pages.

Carrick was a fine D but he couldn't make it happen here. Not sure if it's because of how he was used or what, but Babcock couldn't get into him last season. I thought he was miles better than Polak but whatever.

I think Carrick has a good chance to be a solid bottom pairing dman. Not a fit in Toronto, too much of a “poor man’s Rielly/Gards/Zaitsev” - we need big, defensive, physical dmen to complement them, which isn’t Carrick. But on the right team he could be a steady NHLer.

Latest trade from Stars GM Jim Nill paid off in a big way during Dallas' season opener
DALLAS -- Defenseman Connor Carrick had an impressive Stars debut on Thursday, picking up a pair of secondary assists just three days after Dallas traded a conditional seventh-round pick to Toronto to acquire him.

Carrick said he "just tried to pass to the guys in green tonight."

"I thought he was really great," head coach Jim Montgomery said. "Really poised with the puck, made real crisp passes. Made Jim Nill look like a genius with a seventh-round pick, two assists in game one, plus-two. I thought that was pretty good."

Carrick said his wife and dog both arrived in Dallas, but only one was at the game on Thursday night.

"A bit of a whirlwind," Carrick said. "Kind of chuck your stuff in bags and go. Emotionally, you're trying to figure some things out on the run. You just go down to the essentials like sleep, food, don't be late to the rink. That's about it. It's been fun, though."
