His skating is very good. It ends there. I doubt he plays 10 games for the Stars.

Whats Carrick's issue? He is scared out of his mind to retrieve pucks. He is soft. He loses battles down low. His decision making with the puck is terrible especially if he is pressured, panic and low IQ shows up. He has made the same mistakes for the last 3 years.
Maybe he can carve out a career as a PP specialist.

Hey Leafs fans, how's his skating? Does he have any notable aspects of his game that he excels at? Or things he is noticeably bad at?

Skating is fine, fairly mobile .. has a hard clapper, and has some offensive game that just hasn’t yet translated from the AHL.

He’s gritty and will play physical .. problem is that he’s not a big guy so he’s not great at winning board battles or battles in front of the net. Defensive awareness is okay, but nothing outstanding.

If you have a solid defensive LHD partner on your third pairing, Carrick should do quite well to compliment him

It's not his skating exactly but he sets himself up to be flat footed with poor decisions. So sometimes he'll get beaten by an opponent you don't think he should be beaten by. He has a rocket of a shot but he doesn't get it off very often. He's a bit prickly and definitely doesn't play afraid.

Hope you're right but I remember the same chatter about Anton Stralman and we know how giving him away worked out. Many decent players around the league start out as a 4th liner, a backup goalie or a 7-8 D.

Sure it's possible, and it's also possible the girl I just ended things with after 2 years inherits all the qualities I thought were lacking in the future, but both I and the Leafs have to make decisions based on everything we know in the present. Both CC and my ex have had ample opportunities to not have these days come, and obviously failed in doing so.

And I thought we are going to use him along with Marincin, Neilsen, draft picks and Bracco to get Karlsson from the Sharks

He was very gritty for his size. Not a terrible player. Definitely can be a 6th defenseman on many teams

I'm a bit disappointed

Carrick wasn't a bad #6 and did a good job 5v5 with the right partner, especially Gardiner and Dermott, I also felt there was some untapped offensive potential, he was a good intelligent interview to

He just didn't fit into what Babcock was looking for in a bottom pair defender I guess, I hope the kid does well in Dallas

Well when you have Timmy, Borgman waiting in the wings and maybe even Holl. Carrick had to go.

His skating is okay. He'll always struggle with physical battles because of his size, although he will try to mix it up once in a while.

To be successful, he needs to be a smart defender, making good defensive reads and quick passes in transition. He was struggling with this part of his game last year (and probably his confidence as well) and ended up in the pressbox.

I think it would have been best for him to go to a struggling team where he could have got regular minutes and had some time to find his game, but hopefully this will work out for him.

See ya! Best of luck .

I personally wasn't a fan of Carrick. I liked the grit but he just didn't cut it.

I think Dubas realized Babcock was probably never going to play Carrick in that 3rd pairing spot (Babcock likes his third pairing defenders to PK generally) so figured he might as well clear up some cap space/contract space.

I am so glad I will no longer be hearing:

"Dubas said in an interview that he likes Carrick, and he just signed him to a 1 year deal".

There see! He's being a General Manager: 1. Damage Control statements to ease fans.
2. Doing what is best for the team.

yeah but we both know someone is going to twist this into a pretzel of recrimination:nod:

Would DAL make a great trade partner for Nylander?

Stars' fan here. Respectfully, no. We'd love to have Nylander but we have no one who fits the bill as to what you need on defense. The quality defenders we do have aren't for sale (Klingberg, Heiskanen, Lindell) and the rest (Methot, Johns, Honka) aren't enough to be a centerpiece in a deal for Nylander.

Additionally, from everything I can tell, Dubas is simply not going to move Nylander. We had a similar situation with Benn when he signed his bridge contract. He missed a few games and they eventually settled in the middle (5 years, $5.25M per). Nylander has a bit of a better track record than Benn did at that point, but his game isn't quite as dynamic as Benn's and he may not have the ridiculous ceiling that Benn did either (not to disparage Nylander or anything at all, he's an excellent young forward).

I wouldn't worry about the contract or long-term relationship - it's just business. If he's not signed a month from now, then maybe worry, but I would be shocked if that's the case.

I wonder if Polak might of spoke about Babcock's handling of Carrick and given them the idea that perhaps a change of scenery might be worth gambling a late draft pick for his services.
i kind of think this has some merit, maybe Polak(sneaky bugger that he is) knowing he played ahead of Carrick in Toronto, convinced them on acquiring Carrick so that he'll(Polak) be able to play all 82

carrick wasn't that good but imo he was our 7th best d

I hope this means we are trading for or bringing in another D. We did absolutely lose our 7 today and I am not at all comfortable with Marincin in that spot.

Fine by me. He want from having that awesome AHL playoffs a few years ago, to not taking the next step at all at the next level and his development completely halted. Sucks to see as I was a big fan a few years ago, but 6/7 dman are dime a dozen.

Your post still makes absolutely no sense
Last time: instead of acquiring Laich & Carrick for Winnik + 5th, they should have acquired Laich + a pick (6th or 7th). I prefer those late round picks over B level prospects.
