I'm not debating that. My debate is, if Tavares doesn't sign and Dubas doesn't overpay 3 players that contract would be fine for just 1 more year.

What's fine about paying a 3rd liner 6.25 with a full NMC on a 35+ contract? That's one of the least cap efficient contracts in the league in year 2 and 3. That money can be spent much better in the teams key competitive years.

Seems unlikely. He probably wore Habs Pajamas as a kid. Only way he wears a Leafs jersey is if he dresses up as the great depression for Halloween

Why, because he's french-canadian he must love the Habs? Jack Hughes is American and loves the Leafs, Duchene grew up a Av's fan, Kadri a Habs fan, Doughty a Kings fan. Nobody a Canes fan. Geography hasn't dictated who people fanboy for a while bud, get with the times.

You are talking about the last and this season. For TML fan base and HFB I hope they still will be competitive next season and beyond.

The Leafs look awful this year, so that $6.75M isn’t helping too much, is it?

11-15 still lottery, ya?

Yeah, but Carolina can only be sure to pick 11 as earliest.
Even Leafs miss the playoff and that pick ends up a top-3 pick, Leaf can keep it.

Short answear, if the pick ends up within the top 10 after the lottory, Leafs can decide if they wanna keep it, or give it to Canes.

Such as paying a Cody Ceci 4.5mil, right? Such good use for that money. And in the first place, a 1st round pick's very steep for 1 year of 6mil. Especially if it ends up being like #11.

It is but if they do get a 11-15 pick and win the lottery it then gets protected. Best case scenario would be they finish 20th in the league and doesn’t win the lottery
So its better if they get a 20th pick instead of a 11-15? Its protected if the pick falls 10 or below.

you should hope for an even higher pick in the 2021 draft. :naughty:
While I would normally agree, this draft class is very deep. The 11th pick in this year’s draft could be as good as 4-6 in others. I don’t see Toronto falling that hard. 11th pick is about the worst case scenario for them with their talent level.

No. Leafs won't decide. If it's top 10, they will by the terms of the trade keep 2020 1st and the 2021 1st will be transferred to Canes.

There will be no "oh look, it's 9OA, maybe we let the Canes have it".

I mean I’m a Canes fan from Toronto so I agree with you on that but to find a Francophone who’s a Leafs fan is a much harder task than the other way around.

They can still trade it to Carolina for their own 2021 pick though, right?

If Carolina agrees to such trade, yes.

Probably only after the lottery, though, when it is set that TML has their 2020 1st and CAR owns the TML 2021 1st. I don't think they would be allowed to open (and re-negotiate) a conditional trade before the condition clears out.
