Zach Hyman was drafted by FLA in the 5th round. So I wouldn't say they are nothing.

Taking a look at our last 12 5th round picks (ignoring the last two years).

2006 - none
2007 - Juraj Mikus
2008 - Joel Champagne, Jerome Flaake
2009 - Eric Knodel
2010 - Sam Carrick (39 nhl games), Daniel Brodin
2011 - Tony Cameranesi
2012 - Dominic Toninato (serviceable 13th forward)
2013 - Fabrice Herzog
2014 - Dakota Joshua
2015 - Dmytro Timashov (good spare forward)
2016 - Vladimir Bobylev
2017 - Fedor Gordeev
2018 - Filip Kral

Overall, the chances of hitting something with a 5th is extremely low, and most of the time when we hit with a 5th, it is nothing more than a 13th forward.

Only 3 out of 14 logged nhl games. None have logged more than 90 games....

So 5th round picks are close to nothing.

They’re lottery tickets. I’d say on average, you get about 2-3 Ben Hutton or better level players drafted in the 5th round each year, so that’s about a 7-10% chance of a Hutton+ player from a 5th round pick. Fun fact, Hutton was a 5th rounder too, in an unusually strong 5th round that produced Hutton, Kerfoot and Colin Miller. The chances of a Hyman level player in the 5th round is about ... 1-2%? Like, you’ll probably get 1-2 Hymans per century with solid 5th round drafting.

So fair, not guaranteed nothing, but very likely nothing. In the Leafs’ entire draft history, we’ve not drafted a single particularly good player in the 5th round. Kyle Wellwood is legit in the conversation for best Leafs 5th rounder of all time.

1-2 hyman level players in 5th round every century? That's every 100 years don't exaggerate

On the other hand, we recently drafted Connor Brown in the 6th round and Andreas Johnsson in the 7th round and it stands to reason that 5th round picks are worth more then 7th round picks.

Per team, not total. That’s roughly every 2nd draft having a Hyman+ level player in the 5th round, which seems about right.

The Leafs have been participating in the draft since it started ~60 years ago, and we have yet to draft a Hyman+ level player in the 5th round, with generally one 5th round pick per year.

I was just giving examples of us hitting picks beyond the 5th round. The more shots you have, the better your chance of hitting one and it does happen.

A 5th round pick isn't a very valuable asset, but it's an asset nevertheless.
Agreed. Very unlikely it ever becomes a Ben Hutton or better but an asset none the less.

I had 2 look 2 see if we have ever drafted a 5th rounder comparable to Hyman, in terms of having a significant career, other than Wellwood. There had to be one in 60+ years.
And we have.

Ooh good point. Well, one in 60 years then :)
There were a couple of others who did actually play over 500 games, too. The legendary John "Johnny Malkin" Mitchell and the guy who played the most games as a Leaf drafted 5th rounder...748...Mike Eastwood. Moral of the story? Make sure your 5th round pick is named Mike for maximum success, I guess.

Like the 5th rounder Mike Hoffman.

I see a bright future for Koster.

Or almost our entire 2019 draft of nick, mik, mik, nick and mike.

Usually yes 5th rounders rarely make an impact and not that I don’t agree with you, on a lark I picked a random team to check out their 5th rounders. I figured the Wild were a middle of the pack team and guess which round Kaprizov was picked in.

Best case scenario is Hutton never plays a game for the Leafs.

If so, it's still not an overpayment for insurance on defence.

With all that being said about 5th rounders the draft will be the biggest crapshoot it has maybe ever been this year.

correct, and to try to get as many lottery tickets as possible.
You missing the big picture. Leafs is not in the windows to get lottery tickets. If they are, they should trade away their UFAs to get as many lottery tickets as possible. Can you imagine how many picks Hyman and Jason Spezza can get? Instead, Leafs is in a win-now window, and this is the year they should trade the lottery tickets for insurance for the long cup run. I just don't like that leafs get Hutton instead of Benn who can play both sides.

How did Ben Hutton do yesterday vs VAN?
Wasn't horrible. 0's across the board. Blocked 3 shots, I thought he made simple plays that got the job done. Bigger body, not afraid of traffic. First game so there were a couple of hiccups, but only commited 2 official givaways. think Kevin Gravel.
