Hex did stick by his guy knowing that his team wasn't ready to contend.
Patience would be required to get out from several contracts. $72 million projected cap hit for next season with this current roster. Yikes!!! Kassian/Spooner/Manning come off after next season, which saves $7 million. Then see what to do about the $9.5 million in Russell/Sekeras for 20-21.

Only issue I had with his tenure in Philly was not moving Giroux. Drafted in 2006, so he was unlikely to have many prime years left to be a key part of a contending team.

Are you mad!? The team is primed to contend for the next 3 years w/ tons of legit core pieces, have tons of cap and assets to fill holes, and Giroux is still one of the best players in the NHL.

Moving him any any point would be ludicrousness

Picking GM replacements is hard without the ability to interview these people personally, but I think what ails this team is more than a one person replacement up top. Fire Chia immediately, name MacT interim GM with instructions to only trade pending UFAs for picks and move dead weight to free up cap space where possible for the inevitable replacement GM. Fire Nicholson first thing in the summer, we need the right person onboard to oversee the hiring of the new management group and I don't think he is it. The only person I want to spare in the management group is Bill Scott who's overseeing the Condors.

We need to compose a braintrust that compliments each other well with varying strengths. I'd want a GM that has a strong vision or direction he wants to build the team towards, who asks the right questions of his personnel and knows how to manage and delegate authority/responsibilities to those who surround him, as well as impose the right internal procedures to evaluate how well individuals are doing their jobs. I'd probably want a former player agent as Assistant GM to negotiate all of the contract extensions and do some preliminary legwork on a lot of the trades. I'd want atleast one of the new age analytics gurus to have a prominent seat at the table, responsible for managing the analytics department and trying to inform the GMs decisions, could probably double as a cap specialist. Obviously you'd want one good head and amateur scout to give their 2 cents on their respective areas of expertise. Then probably someone with a fair amount of experience in a winning organization as the president of hockey operations who provides a level of insight from someone who's been around a while and can be someone you bounce ideas off of.

I like Hart but I’m not banking on a 21 year old goalie. A lot of their pieces took a big step back this season.

I like their base. But I think they are a borderline playoff team next season. Gutiux is 31 in 2019. If he was Schenn age I would keep him. For me, I would have moved him maybe 2 years ago.

This would piss off the entire city, but what if Wayne Gretzky was given the reigns? Working alongisde his brother. Of course it's nepotism and just more of the same 'ol boys club crap.
But would he actually do a decent job? He's very knowledgeable and stays current with the NHL and it's prospects. I don't know, I have a feeling it's either Keith or Wayne to be appointed next GM.

Personally I want Hunter, his body of work with the London Knights is impressive, they are the super team of the league and develop prospects (ie. Bouchard) like no other OHL franchise. Him and Dubas did a fine job in Toronto, and it's unclear who made most of the decisions between the 2 of them, but it's been said that he was the primary reason they drafted Marner over Hanifin and Provorov.
But obviously he can't just pick up and leave the Knights high and dry mid-season, so there would have to be an interim GM (probably Keith) until April

Craig Heisinger Winnipeg jets assistant gm.

Their drafting is basically an assembly line of pro players. Can't think of any bad trades. Fabulous contract to schiefle.

Do you honestly trust them to conduct an interview for a GM and then pick the proper candidate?

Not so much, but at some point it almost becomes a question of who is even available that would be as bad as Chiarelli.

Like even Garth Snow, if he was the GM here from day 1 of the McDavid era, and he did all the dumb things, but he would've taken Barzal. Imagine how different this team is with this top six

RNH McDavid Who Cares
Who Cares Draisaitl Barzal

I think Boston had a cap expert as well didn't stop Chia from telling him to shut up and do his own thing and being the GM of the AHL team is a big enough role to be a job title by its lonesome, you can get a different cap expert.

Who's he taken outside of Kyle Connor? Just curious. Ehlers right?

Wayne was one of the worst coaches in NHL history.

Lets not confuse being a great player with a great manager.

Plus if you've heard him in intermission interviews he clearly has some personal issues he needs to work through.

Gretzky as GM seems interesting. Atleast we know every GM in the League is going to pick up his phone calls and deal cordially with him. How much business sense and organizational strength he has? Probably not much as a former athlete / cushy millionaire.

Which Gretzky? Not a chance in hell Wayne is moving up to Edmonton full time. He's gotten too used to living in LA/Arizona.

Umm Hextall. He took the worst cap and worst dcore in the NHL, to the best cap situation and top 3 prospect pool in the NHL in 4 years...all without tanking

What are Edm's problems ATM? Defense and Cap. Management that doesn't want to tank?

Worth a look for sure. That said I think our bigger problem going forward might be forward depth.

The next GM will be starting with Klefbom, Larsson, Nurse, Bouchard, and Russell at least and that's somewhat OK.

Hextall got rid of 10 mil in dead cap space in one trade(Lecavs and Schenn), all the while getting value in return. Lecavs was in the minors and the other GM had to convince him to retire to facilitate the trade. Now that is some grade AAAAAA Gm'ing

You want to rid yourself of Spooner and Looch, My $ is on him

Also, he didn't hand out one clause during his tenure.

Stud!
