Hey gang ... long time listener, first time caller ... so, first things first: "Wolski and Svatos! They're God's gifts to hockey, the most under-rated prospects ever, sure-fire Hall-Of-Famers, can put the puck in the net with their minds, etc."

That said, here's my question (inspired partly by a handful of comments on this board that the "top 50" list might be improved by developing separate positional lists): Who are the top 5 prospects (less than 10 NHL GP, drafted or undrafted), by position?

I suspect it might look something like:

LW: Ovechkin, Crosby, Vanek, Michalek, Ladd
C: Carter, Parise, Malkin, Schremp, Brule
RW: Kostitsyn, Grigorenko, Stewart, Tukonen, Perezhogin
D: Phaneuf, Suter, Barker, Whitney, Grebeshkov
G: Lehtonen, Toivonen, Ouellet, Montoya, Bryzgalov

Foregoing the obvious debates about how to carve up the rankings at each position 1-5 (plenty of extant threads to that effect), who would you list in the top 5 (in any order you like) at each position?

that's a pretty darn good list there gonzopher ... I'd probably add Radulov in there somewhere with what he's doing in the Q this year is pretty darn impressive ... adjusting to the North American game really well

Only drafted prospects are considered for such lists...hence I would leave Crosby and Brule off for those reasons.

Grigorenko has not recovered well from his injuries. If a Top 50 was done today taking into account his start to the season, he wouldn't have been on the list.

So...I would take a stab....my OWN personal rankings.

LW: Ovechkin, Horton, Vanek, Semin, Ladd
C: Carter, Parise, Malkin, Horton, Richards
RW: Zherdev, Perry, Stewart, Fehr, Brown
D: Phaneuf, Suter, Babchuk, Tjutin, Barker
G: Lehtonen, Toivonen, Fleury, Bryzgalov, Lundqvist

Not in any particular order.

Horton, Zherdev, Semin and Fleury have played more than 10 games. They are still propsects technically. Are we allowed to use guys wh ohave played more than 10 games.

Top defensive-forward prospects since there is a Selke Trophy out there for the Gainey-esque players.

In no particular order:
Ryan Kesler
Chris Higgins
Yared Hagos
Petteri Nokelainen
Kyle Chipchura

Even after looking at some of these lists, Lundqvist gets no respect.

If he was putting up those numbers in the AHL, and making the adjustment to the North American rink and style, he'd get much more credit.

damn, it took you this long to chime in on how Lundqvist gets no respect? What, were you sleeping or something?

EDIT: And another thing. Just because he's not on everyone's list does not mean he's not good.

And, Kronwall is arguably the AHL's best defenseman and was on the verge of cracking Detroit's top 4 before he went down with an injury. But, you dont see detroit fans *****ing in every post about how he's not on everyone's list. Get over it.

Thanks all for your input ... it's appreciated and well received.

One question: DoobieDoobieDo: You were the lone voice for omitting Parise and Carter from the top-5-center group, opting instead for O'Sullivan, Schremp, and Getzlaf (all of whom I have a liking for) ... just wondering what your train of thought on this point is ... And thanks again ...

Personally, I am just giving a heads up. I like Carter and Parise and I think people hype them as much but I think Getzlaf, Schremp, and O'Sullivan have the same upside as Parise and Carter.

I like your list with the exception of Vanek...but not sure who else Id put there....
most likely S Bernier

If Brown fits the criteria thats the only other guy Id replace, most like over Radulov.

Other than that I liek your list

Seperate positional lists doesn't quite do it for me. Is Horton the #3 best center? Or the #1 RW? Just an example. Forwards don't always stick to one position.

Seperate positional lists for ranking prospects is a great idea IMO but I think three groups would work a lot better, Forwards, Defencemen and Goaltenders.
