40 year old Bourque was better than 40 year old Chelios.

That's very debatable. Chelios lead the NHL in +/- at age 40 and both were runners up for the Norris. They also both won cups in their 40 year old seasons. Seeing as Bourque retired right at 40 and Chelios had several productive years after its only fair to put him ahead of Bourque for this question.

Messier? Really? Why if I may ask.

Who else? I know Messier gets criticised for just padding his stats, but the truth is that the number of forwards who have made an impact after 40 is very low. He got 67 points in his age 40 season, and has the second highest amount of total points scored after 40 ever.

I wouldn't object to putting Larionov above him though, considering that he was a better two-way player later in his career.

His 67-point season was his 39-40 season.
