I'd need time to think about all the contenders but off the top of my head your list looks like it has the prime suspects though i would change them around for me.

1.Fetisov
2.Chelios (as much as i hate to admit it)
3.Lidstom
4.Leetch
5.Salming

I think he met all time D-men. Even if he didn't, WTF is Poti doing on that list?

Fetisov is only on top if we allow for careers outside the NHL to be included. If not, then Chelios would have to be ranked higher. I don't have a list atm but I just like to put in my 2 cents.

poti is underrated and on a terrible team. he got ran from edmonton before he could establish his game. put him in detroit or tampa and he would be incredible

HAHAHA.....funniest post I've read this month.

Poti's garbage. If he was on Detroit or Tampa Bay, he would be riding pine.

You even topped your last post!

Poti is nowhere near Boynton's level. Actually not even close. Poti's a PP specialist, who has no idea what the 'defensive coverage' means. Boynton's a solid 2way D man. If you want someone to compare Poti too, see Andy Delmore.

On Boston, I'd rather have Hal Gill, Gonchar, Boynton and in fact I'd rather have Moran or McGillis (if they resign). That would make Poti no 6, unless Milan Jurcina has something to say about it.

Are sure you're not related to Poti?

This thread was started as the best 5 dmen, not from Canada. That means we're talking in the present. Poti is garbage (in the present), he may get better but as of now, please.

It's in the History of Hockey section........and the poster started with Fetisov (retired) and Salmig (retired). I think he was pretty clear about this being all-time, and not just the present.

That even more so backs up my post. Cause Poti's done nothing so far to even worth mentioning him in the top 30.

For the record I was talking about all time. I assumed I didn't need to put " best defencemen all time that are not from Canada" for a couple of reasons.

First, it is in the History of Hockey section. Secondly, I had Fetisov and Salming who are both retired in my list.

I'm not going to bother commenting on Tom Poti because I want to stay on topic.

Off the top of my head, in approximate order...

Lidstrom
Fetisov
Chelios
Howe
Salming
Leetch
Zubov
Housley
Suter

Others to possibly consider: D Hatcher, K Hatcher, Schneider, Ozolinsh, Numminen, Gonchar, Tverdovsky

I did this list quickly so I could have missed someone.

1. Fetisov
2. Salming
3. Lidstrom
4. Chelios
5. Leetch

I would say

Lidstrom-Being a Wing player that pains me
Chelios
Leetch
Salming
Housley-Deserves a mention so I used him, Fetisov's best play waas with the Red Army team.

Actually, there's a rumour both of them will suit up for the Leafs next season, to bring our core age down a few years ;)

1.) Fetisov
2.) Chelios
3.) Lidstrom
4.) Salming
5.) Langway

Honorable mention: Phil Housley, who was NOWHERE near as good defensively as some people try to make him out to be. And Mark Howe, who was a great defenseman before being switched to wing by the Flyers.

Leetch is one of the top 10 defensemen OF THE 1990'S only. Behind Paul Coffey, Ray Bourque, Chris Chelios, Rod Langway, Nik Lidstrom, and maybe Konstantinov (had he continued to play). Not even in the top 20 of all-time, IMO.
