What are the top 30 teams in Europe? Would the list compose of 20 KHL teams and the top 2 teams from other leagues? If there was just 1 league in Europe to represent the 30 best teams on that continent, how would it look like?

We have tried discussing this topic and it doesn't seem to be one that many people can agree on. Conventional KHL big powers - Ak Bars, Salavat, Magnitka, Avto, Avangard, Dynamo Moscow, SKA, CSKA, Loko, Jokerit would be in it for sure. They would be serious title challengers in any other European league. Since the number you gave is 30 strong mid-table teams like Barys, Traktor, Spartak would make the cut as well as big teams from other leagues: Tappara, Karpat, Mannheim, Munchen, Lugano, Zurich, Bern, Zug, Trinec, Kometa Brno, Frolunda, Vaxjo, Skelleftea..

Then it comes to this even playing field where you can probably name 30 or so teams competing for the rest of the spots that are roughly at the same level. Another problem is that teams in Sweden or Switzerland have different cycles compared to the rest of Europe. In the KHL it's mostly same teams competing for the same position year after year. Same in the Czech Republic or Finland with a rare team here and there which manages to get into a big boy race. In Sweden or Switzerland, you can go from finals to being relegated in 2 years (so it happened to Djurgardens) and then back to the finals (where they again played last year). Zurich played in relegation playouts last year even though they are probably the most successful Swiss team over last 10 years. You get the picture.

Do you think the 2 best teams from Austria could make the top 30, or would they be in the next group of 30 teams that are on a similar level? Austria did well in last year's champions league.

Easy "no" on the first one and Klagenfurt could maybe make a case for the second group of 30 but I also don't see another team in Austria which would be close currently.

European club rankings - Top 250 des clubs européens
There's these guys that make the list of top 250 every year. KHL fans disagree.
Other than the fact that your link takes to the year 2016 the actual up to date list is pretty good, I don't think many people disagree. It pretty much lists the same teams I did and exactly same teams from the KHL as that part is obvious.

Since it's based on one year only there is some consequences to it, like Zurich falling from 20th place to 50th in a year. Vaxjo fell from 2nd to 33rd. But for what they are doing, it makes sense. In my view, it slightly overrates DEL and Liiga but that's a non-issue in a general sense.

teams from the bigger leagues in Europe don't care about the Champions Hockey League, so we have a problem when looking at inter league play in that league.

Sweden, Swiss, Finn.. they only care once they get to the end stages and some prize money/extra sponsorship oppertunities are on the line.

Teams from the not-as-big-leagues like Austrian, British etc obviously go all guns blazing to try and prove the point they can compete with the big boys
