I tried to make sense of Andrew Berkshire's top 20 lists in one big table. If you don't know what I'm referring to, it's these top 20 "by the numbers" lists for centers, left wingers, right wingers, and defencemen that were posted to Sportsnet:

http://www.sportsnet.ca/author/andrew-berkshire/

While the top 20 rankings were given a different weight depending on each position, the 3 categories seemed to be consistent calculations. Each of the 3 categories were comprised (by an unknown weight) of:

Offence: 5-vs-5 and powerplay goals/60, primary assists/60, secondary assists/60, shot attempts/60, scoring chances/60, scoring chance generating plays/60, relative team goals for/60.

Defence: 5-vs-5 and shorthanded loose puck recoveries, defensive plays (hits, stickchecks, pass blocks, and shot blocks), relative team shot attempts against/60, relative team goals against/60, quality of teammates, and quality of competition.

Transition: 5-vs-5 shot attempt differential, relative shot attempt differential, possession driving plays/60, controlled entry rate, controlled exit rate, completed passes/60, and pass success rate.

The table below comprises of each player's normalized score out of 100 for all 3 categories, along with how far ahead (or behind) each player is relative to the average score of the top 20 at their position.

For example, the average defensive score among the top 20 D-men was 57.4. So Brodie's +/- with his 60.3 score for defence would be: 60.3 - 57.4 = +2.9. The average score among all 80 players on here was 50.9, but I only looked at each position's average rating to try to keep things more consistent depending on biases for each position.

To sort +/- properly, click on each heading 3 times until you see the lowest score at the top. For whatever reason, that's the only way to sort everything properly in a uniform order.

Why didn't you total up the differentials and then rank the players by that? Alphabetical is rather meaningless.

There's separate headings for that that you can click on to sort. Sorting by only one of them doesn't make sense when there's 3 different categories. For the +/- you have to click on it 3 times to sort from worst to best (I think that's the only way to do it properly on HF).

Sorry, I did not realize those tables were dynamic

I think they're still some issues with sorting. I sort from lowest highest on +/-, but exceedingly high numbers still end up in the middle of the list.

If you click any +/- heading 3 times it should fix that. I have no idea how it's coded, but that's what has worked for me. If a mod could help with this it would be appreciated. Seems odd that it's this difficult to sort when it's a simple + or -.

There is string sort order and value sort order. String is like alphabetical. 2.1 and 21 are sorted together since they both start with 2. Value will sort 21 far away from 2.1 since there is a magnitude of 10 difference in value.

Looks like the sort order instead of having the normal two sort orders, ascending and descending, the function appears to have at least four...ascending by string, descending by string, then ascending by value and then descending by value.
