Interesting side note: The Canucks have never selected first overall.
I bet alot of teams (more then ten?) haven't.

Another interesting note, the Flames have never had a top 5 pick.

Another interesting note, this is one depressing thread.

Wait till we do the top 10 worst 1st round picks.

Islander fans are already seeing the ghosts of Scott Scissons, Brad Delgarno, Dave Chyzowski, Brett Lindros and many, MANY more.

...Cheveldayoff, Chynoweth, MacPherson, Boutilier...

Pat Flatley was a pretty good first rounder if my memory is working.

I'm sure Calgary and NYI won't be as bad as could possibly be.
I remember writing a post on here comparing Edmonton's worst 1st round picks combined of the 1990's to Daigle:

Jason Soules (15th, 1989) 0-0-0-0
Scott Allison (17th, 1990) 0-0-0-0
Joe Hulbig (13th, 1992) 55-4-4-8
Nick Stajduhar (16th, 1993) 2-0-0-0
Jason Bonsignore (4th, 1994) 79-3-13-16
Steve Kelly (6th, 1995) 147-9-12-21
Matthieu Descoteaux (19th, 1996) 5-1-1-2
Michel Riesen (14th, 1997) 12-0-1-1
Michael Henrich (13th, 1998) 0-0-0-0
Jani Rita (13th, 1999) 13-3-1-4

Totals (10 guys) = 313- 20- 32- 52
Alexandre Daigle = 570-124-175-299

New York Islanders - possibly the best drafting team ever. To bad many of these players enjoyed success elsewhere.

1 Denis Potvin 1973 1st overall
2 Mike Bossy 1977 15th overall
3 Pat Lafontaine 1983 3rd overall
4 Todd Bertuzzi 1993 23rd overall
5 Roberto Luongo 1997 4th overall
6 Wade Redden 1995 2nd overall
7 Brent Sutter 1980 15th overall
8 Darius Kasparitus 1992 5th overall
9 Eric Brewer 1997 5th overall
10 Rick Dipietro 2000 1st overall

Clark Gilles? He is a Hall-of-Famer.

True and I strongly considered him, but I was born in '79 and I can't pretend to grasp the strength of that generation, so I couldn't justify him ahead of some others, especially considering he was without a 100 point season.

Pretty sad if you have little knowledge of the team pre 1990 other than Yzerman.

Here's my Wings' top 10 first round picks:

Dionne
Yzerman
Primeau
Foligno
Craven
Rutherford
Fischer
R. Lapointe
Murphy
Burr

Here are some of the guys that didn't make my top 10:

McCourt
Blaisdell
Huber
Fedyk

None of them were slugs. McCourt retired early, but left with stats around .90 points per game, and that was mostly attained before the high scoring of the mid 1980's. Blaisdell was a solid third/fourth liner in the league for a number of years.

Obviously not as impressive a list as Montreal's for instance: (Lafleur, Shutt, Gainey, Koivu, Tremblay, Risebrough, Mondou, Napier, Cassells, Svoboda, Corson), but not horrible.

Read my other post before you I didn't go past 20 years

7. Richard Matvichuk-8th overall 1992
8. Craig Hartsburg-6th overall 1979
9. Tom McCarthy-10th overall 1979

Got pretty tough after number 6 or so.

A Rockwellian Pleasantville
PHX/WPG:

1. Howerchuk
2. Tkachuk
3. Selanne
4. Doan
5. Babych

Not so good after that:

6. Marchment
7. A. Ward
8. Briere
9. Elynuik
10.McBain

Doan and Briere should rise. I'm also betting that Sjostrom takes over a few of these guys. Who knows about Wheeler.
