He was still one, if not the best defensive forward of all time winning the first 4 selkes. He was a unique player. He also played on a Hans dynasty and was a huge contributor.Gainey was very good defensively, but his offense was abysmal for a supposed top 100 player. The dude never even scored 50 points in a season despite playing in the 1970s and 1980s.
Holding offense against him makes no sense considering his impact on the game defensively. Guys like Niewendyk on the other hand were purely offensive players who were not at a high elite level, but were consistent for the most part. His “3 cups with 3 teams” was basically his in into the Hall.
