Lastnight I scored 2 goals from my side of center.

Goal 1: on the PK my winger goes deep, retrieves the puck and sends it back to me (center) at our blue line. I take 1 stride and let a heavy slap shot go on net as he is clearing the zone. A laser right inside the glove side post about 16" off the ice. No idea how the goalie missed it.

Goal 2: I have friends on the other team who bet $5 I couldn't do it again. So in the 3rd period I get the puck in my zone, cross the blue line and let another clapper go. This one isn't the best shot and goes a bit high with a less speed, just before clearing the net it drops just under the bar.

The best part of it all, I only had 3 shots on net the whole night, the 3rd was a clear from behind my own goal line on a PK.

I played my first winter league game after playing roller hockey for a month. I could barely skate at first. Roller hockey messes with your ice skating.

Today I found out that as a short (5'4) Dek Hockey player, I get called for an 'embellishment' against bigger guys.

It's not my fault I'm a lightweight hobbit out there. A slight push and I get knocked down (especially from a team that hacks and whacks)

How do I plead my case to the refs?

This whole season I've created a ton of chances for myself, but having trouble converting. I've found when shooting on the rush I have trouble elevating the puck unless I'm on my off wing. I've gotten a lot better at using my speed and stick handling to shake loose in the slot but all my shots end up along the ice or wide. I probably average 5 shots on goal a game but only have 3 goals in 8 games.

Might be pointless, but the best thing you can do is fight with all you've got to NOT get thrown around. That way they'll know you're trying NOT to be.

I say this because I'm on the opposite side of the spectrum. What would be a hold, rough, etc. penalty on someone else all day long, because I'm hard to impede the refs tend to ignore it. If I actually get caught off-guard and tripped up bad, it will be a call. It's got to fully over the top just to get the benefit of the doubt. Meanwhile we have a guy on my team who is scrawny and not strong on his feet at all, any time someone touches him he seems to go down or react. Rarely gets calls despite all the reaction. If he were to play tougher through that, he'd get more going his way because the refs wouldn't assume he's milking it. Not saying you are, but maybe the way you react makes the refs think perhaps. Or maybe the refs just suck, that won't be a first ;)

Sold my blocker and catcher yesterday. Was a sad moment. Someone coming tonight for the chest protector.

No more goalie for me. It was a fun ride the last 10 years. Learning the position and honing my own techniques was a blast. It was truly one of the best experiences in my life. I actually did very well and people wonder why im doing this now. Ill never forget.

Still keeping my "out" gear. Ive been playing since i was 3 and ill be ready for that next game always.

Had someone quit our roller hockey team after like 8 games played. He was always first to puck battles, played his heart out, skated hard, but was upset that he wasn’t scoring or putting up points. He was acting too hard on himself but he had made up his mind to quit.

Why do you have to stop playing Goalie? Injury?
No i just have too much going on. I gave it time, but myy gear had pretty much sat around for 2 years. Drop in/shinny is too hit and miss to matter, and frankly too late at night for me anymore. And i really just dont see myself commiting to a team again full time.

I had my fun. Like i said it was a blast. If the itch ever comes back i can always buy more again

...Tuesday night I had to witness this happen to my teammate, at the end of a 40-and-over game where we only had 6 skaters:

Broken ankle in two places, out for the season. Perpetrator got a match penalty, supposed 30 day suspension from all USA hockey activity, including youth coaching (he coaches a 12U travel team in Phoenix)

Honestly, that guy should be banned for years if not life. The play itself didn't look completely bonkers, but it was late and this isn't the NHL, where players expect that kind of garbage to happen and are mostly on guard. Catch an unsuspecting player with stuff like this and its always a recipe for injury.

Skated for the first time since breaking my ankle and leg the other night and oh boy did it feel good. Haven’t lost too much skill and and even just skating around with a stick and puck was amazing.

Weirdly enough my ankle actually felt better the next day

I don't understand what would cause someone to do something like that. I mean, you have two players on their knees waiting for the final whistle. There are two guys on blue appealing to the ref for something, so I guess maybe there was some kind of questionable check since the blue guy on his knee's stick is halfway to the blue line. I need to know what happened!

Not today, but on Saturday night, I returned from a partially torn medial patellofemoral ligament. Knee felt great, though I was very rusty to start.
First shift I cop a puck to the ankle (small spot between shin guard and skate), have some nice swelling.

Not today, but recently, moved to a place where I can play hockey or skate every frigging day, if I want to, outside and entirely for free. From November through middle of March. Feels surreal.

Damn, I wish I could do that. But I also like hot summers by the beach. There's a lot of public outdoor inline/roller hockey rinks in my area though so i play a lot more roller than ice for that reason.

I'm lucky if the ponds or lakes are frozen for more than a week or two in the dead of winter in my area, usually only get 2 or 3 skates on those per season.

Yeah, we get beaches in the summer here as well. That's what is nice.

Yeah, it's pretty great :) All the local parks here have these vast areas that they'll flood and keep maintained all winter, in addition to all the lakes/ponds you can skate on. Almost makes you feel like a tool for going *indoors* to skate afterwards, except that the ice is invariably better :D

So I'm thinking about playing again. I haven't been on the ice in at least 5 years. I have 0 conditioning and planning on going to open hockey on Sunday. This is going to suck!

All thanks to my 4 year old daughter because she was so sad that she hasn't seen me play and my 7 year old daughter got to see me when she was a baby.

Scored 2 goals in a blowout 8-0 playoff game. Starting to finally elevate the puck on the rush and scoring a lot more, feels good.

It's been a few years since I've officiated, but I habitually saved my incident reports to my Google Drive, and ran across this gem of an incident:

With 4:55 remaining in the third period the Dusters scored a goal. As I turned to skate towards the scorekeeper to report the goal, I saw Mafia Hockey #77 Bob Smith cross check a player on the Dusters. Because this action was well after the play had ended, I assessed a 5-minute major for cross checking. Dusters player #35 John Doe immediately retaliated by punching #77 Smith and tackling him to the ice. #77 Smith did not engage in the fight and only protected himself on the ice. #35 Doe was assessed a major and game misconduct for fighting and #77 Smith was not assessed any additional penalty.

As both players were on the ice, Dusters player #00 Jack Doe cross checked #77 Smith in the back, then turned his body and used the butt end of his stick to strike #77 Smith repeatedly. At this point both officials had arrived at the scene and first removed #00 Jack Doe from the altercation. The officials then broke up the two players that were still on the ice. #00 Jack Doe received a major for cross checking and a major plus game misconduct for butt ending.

Outside of that altercation the game was relatively calm. There was one tripping penalty in the third period by #77 Smith. There was also a small confrontation with 8:48 left in the third period involving #00 Jack Doe where both players received minors for unsportsmanlike conduct. There were not any other calls to be made. After the game was finished, #00 Jack Doe returned to the ice in his street clothes in an attempt to confront the officials about penalties. He was asked to leave the ice as he had been assessed a game misconduct already. He did not leave the ice and was assessed a match penalty for abuse of officials. He was eventually escorted off the ice by rink staff and the scorekeeper George Miller.

(names changed to protect the innocent; John and Jack Doe described as such because they were siblings)
