I was looking on Left Wing Lock and was surprised to see they only show Forward 1, 2, and 3 and Defenseman 1 and 2 for line combinations. It is pretty clear these tables are at random and do not represent 'LW - C - RW' or 'LD - RD'.

Is there a source out there that shows how many minutes or games started a player has played by position? It would not be fun to go dig for 70+ starting lineups for 31 teams so I thought I would ask HF first. Thanks.

You can probably find out who was played in what position to start the game, but lines are fluid and the question of "who was the center, who was the right wing" will always be difficult to answer; even for those who watch the games.

This is probably because, if you look at the way the NHL itself tracks events on the ice, you can't make a coherent L-C-R designation:

Play By Play

First shift of the game, Arizona has a line of C-C-R, then Carolina makes a change to counter with C-C-L and then switches to R-R-L.

Trying to convert this into coherent lines would be a nightmare. I understand why a database would just convert it to F1,F2,F3.

Do you know of an organized website I can use to see every team starting lineup for each game?

Thank you for the quick and helpful responses.

I've looked for this information for years, I would like to use it for Sim hockey, but I haven't found anything so far and this is the fourth year i've been looking...

best I've come up with is combining all of the available data. Leftwinglock, starting lineups (from HF and Twitter), and supplementing with listed positions from reputable sites (NHL.com, Forecaster, HockeyDB) with some common sense to come up with a 99% accurate position listing. But it's very time intensive.

I still think HF users could come up with something fairly quickly and I plan to start a similar thread once the season is over. For example, I have watched every Preds game and even though I could say that someone like Jarnkrok has played all three forward positions this season, i'd list him as a RW. It would take me about 10 minutes to run down the whole Preds lineup and list their "correct" positions and line combinations. Surely we can put something together as a group on HF to get this right.

And yes, I know Caley and ????? have threads listing depth charts and lineups, but even those I don't think really answer this question clearly, even though they are both wonderful threads and super useful in their own right.

Dailyfaceoff.com is probably your best bet for current games.

Going back in history? I think you’ll have to check things like game previews, twitter feeds. GDTs here, etc.
