It is a bit frustrating to me that the Canes have both 1) An atrocious NHL offense and 2) two top-5 AHL goal scorers who haven't seen one NHL game this year.

Aho - Driver
Skinner - 3rd shift Driver
McGinn - Aspiring Metallurgist
Staal - Passenger
Lindholm - Passenger
Teravainen - Passenger
Ryan - Passenger (sadly probably the closest to being a driver out of the entire passenger group)
Williams - Passenger
Rask - Passenger

The Canes have one consistent offensive player and he is currently injured. At some point they are going to have to take a flyer on a forward willing to get the puck on net in a meaningful way.

The real question is..are we better than last year?

Lindholm, TT, and Aho are....but results are worse.

At one point it looked like we were making baby steps, but I'm not seeing it in the grand scheme of things. Looks like a group that's treading water due to half the group taking steps forward and the other half taking steps back.

Skinner, Faulk, and to an extent Slavin/Pesce (slightly) are worse as is the PK which balances that out.

Even so, the results aren't better or worse than last year if I did this correctly. Last year on 1/24/17 the Canes were 21-19-7 for 49 point in 47 games. Right now, they are 21-19-8 for 50 points in 48 games. Scary how close those numbers are.

I'm not even sure how I feel about Derek Ryan anymore. Would it be worse to get rid of him or to keep him? I'm so confused.

I'd like to replace Derek Ryan with a better player, absolutely. But the issue of weak center depth and him being over slotted isn't his fault. I think somebody made a comparison in the off season that his production is very comparable to a guy like Bonino, and he just got paid 4(ish?) times more. If you have an actual first line center, then Staal, Ryan looks acceptable as a 3C, at least for the short term.

On the whole there's some very marginal improvement in terms of the overall on-ice performance At this point last season we had 49 points whereas this season we have 50 points. We were also in the midst of a 5-game pointless streak at this time last year, our longest skid up to that point. Thus far our longest pointless streak has been 3-games. So in some regards it's baby steps.
