Thoughts on Joakim Andersson

I think more time is needed to figure this guy out.

From what I've seen, his shot is weak and not accurate and his passing is nothing special. Both of his goals against Luongo should've been stopped and would've probably been stopped on any other night or by any other professional-level goalie.

On the other hand, for 2/3 goals he's scored so far - his first and his third - he was in great position to score and both were scored from high traffic areas. He also seems to look more comfortable as a net front presence than either Abdelkader or Kopecky when those experiments were underway. I could actually see him making a career out of scoring garbage goals and being Johnny on the Spot.

As for Andersson as a 4th liner, I don't see the point of it unless he's going to be a go-to PP or PK specialist. Fourth liners that aren't (a) extremely fast, (b) good and frequent hitters, and/or (c) PK/PP specialists, are nothing more than placeholders, in my opinion.

Guy has been meh. I dont think he has earned a spot on the team. He hasn't been bad the last few games, but he certainly hasn't made me think he is anything special.

He's been alright so far. I really liked the one game where he played on a line with Tatar and Nyquist, especially as a power play unit. He's been pretty good in front of the net as a screener when needed, but I'm pretty sure he was called up mostly because of size. Or thickness as Fabricoh likes to put it.

I think Ferraro would have been a better call up for the bottom 6 with his speed and PK ability. Also I hope Sheahan gets a call-up at some point this season.

Awwww Jim Nill has a track record of success. Let's hear about yours big guy. :D

Ah ha...now I know what you're reacting to. I didn't even realize it was your post I quoted when I commented about people "being premature with their pronouncements". I tend to skim through threads these days, sorry if that comment offended you.

That was really just a general observation about the way people on these boards were reacting to Brunner and Anderson's 2 goal game. All of a sudden Brunner is an allstar and Andersson is a full-time NHLer with Franzen-type potential.

I definitely don't think as highly about Andersson as you do, and I'm not an NHL scout (nor is anyone else on this forum that I'm aware of). So if you think it's necessary to discredit me based on that fact, or because I don't share the same opinion as Jim Nill, go right ahead.

Now you're gonna put me on ignore? Boy, that escalated quickly...

To actually contribute to the thread now:

I think Andy could be a Holmer type guy for us, too. Maybe somewhere between Holmer and Mule if he works on his skating. A blend of their styles would be a big plus for this team, IMO. That type of guy would be a breath of fresh air when considering how often we watch our team pass and skate around the perimeter.

I like him. I can see the Franzen comparison (in play styles, not expectations) but honestly I think he could develop into a decent bottom 6 penalty killer who can provide a bit of offense. Kinda like a smaller Boyle.

I like him....he's been solid so far IMO. Not spectacular, but solid, and I don't notice many glaring mistakes with his decision making. With a full roster, i'd rather see him centering the 4th line than Abdelkader.

I hope he can still pick up half a step, like Boyle did in New York. It would be huge if he could, without that long-term I don't see his place in the lineup when Sheahan comes up.

It's nice to see prospects like Andersson and Lashoff show competency at the NHL level - as I had largely written them off.

I'm hoping the next wave of prospects quickly surpasses them and we get some nice draft picks for trading them, but if the next wave does not pan out as well, these are nice home-grown depth guys to have on the team.

Seconded. Dude has more offense instincts to Abdelkader. Still mad we signed him for 4 years...

Gator needs to get back to his game which is pissing people off and hitting things that move. He's too busy trying to connect sweet passes to Datsyuk when he should be running over people to get to the net and facewashing the nearest guy when he gets there. When's the last time he body checked someone?

For that matter, when's the last time any Wing was mean? Besides Tootoo... well maybe Franzen a couple of times... that's kind of sad.

Another strong night in the faceoff dot for Joakim: won 75% of his draws. I think he can be a Gaustad type of player without the fights. Actually got some decent PK time last night so it will be worth watching to see if he sees his 4v5 IT increase. He's good along the boards and can be a net front presence. I'm happy he's getting lots of IT this season so we can see exactly what he can contribute at the NHL level.

Not to underrate. Our net front guys are 33, 34 and 38 years old. Would be welcomed to add someone younger to the mix, who's healthy enough to take that beating aswell.

Net front guys are easy to find.

Exactly. Abby is giving it a shot but hasn't produced much yet. It'd be nice if Andersson could become a 4th line center who can PK and be the net front guy on your 2nd power play unit. He's not there quite yet but he's getting lots of ice time. He's also occupying d-men in front of the net which has given Tatar some open net to shoot at.

All in all I like what I'm seeing and I can see why Babcock wants him in the lineup. Our bottom 6 could not score before Tatar and Andersson were brought up from Grand Rapids.

So Andersson has most often centered a line with Tomas Tatar and Patrick Eaves. Since he's been brought up his line has put up:

Andersson: 3 goals, 2 assists
Tatar: 3 goals, 3 assists
Eaves: 1 goal, 3 assists

At the start of the season our bottom 6 generated no offense. None. Zero. Zip. We now have a third line that has put up 7 goals and 8 assists over the past dozen or so games.

Yeah, when Cleary was taken off from the 3rd line, they started to produce and Datsyuk cooled down. :shakehead

Tatar - Andersson - Eaves has been our best line the past two games. They bring it every shift.

Aside from one turnover and a questionable pass in his own zone, Andersson has been good defensively and has enough skill to produce on the third line. If he can improve his net-front game I'd rather have him than Emmerton because he could be a vital piece on the PP. He was on the PK the past two games if I remember correctly, I think with Z.

...but Franzen is mean in a pillow fight sort of way. Patrick Kane may be the only NHL player that is afraid of him. :(
