Its a known and sad fact many NHL teams are struggling to make any money
Most of the ownership / loss of revenue stems from teams not getting enough attendance due to lack of support.
is this because of where they are located or moreso because of their team's inability to make it to the post-season

Perhaps the NHL needs to look at their playoff structure and change it to include more teams maybe 20 or even upto 24

teams like Detroit which make playoffs 20 years in a row and making more profit then a team such as florida which has n't made it to post season in 10 yrs.

what are other thoughts about this
good idea to have more teams in the post season ?

Can't say I agree. We would end up rewarding teams for having bad seasons.

team with no extra (playoff money) = less money available to spend on players = bad team

vicious circle

besides, adding 4 teams to playoffs (as an example) wouldn't be a big deal
most of the time, those next 4 teams that didn't make the playoffs have a pretty close/similar stats (points)
Sometimes we have teams in east or west have more points than team making the playoffs in different conference

I still feel like it'd be rewarding bad performance.

Doesn't seem like there's any real incentive to get better, if you're making the playoffs with a bad team. Part of it is having ownership willing to put up the extra money for better players. In some cases, teams already pay a good amount for player salary and still miss the playoffs.

This would only feed the same vicious cycle. More teams playing longer = more revenue. More revenue = higher cap. Higher cap= higher player cost/spending on players.

Teams that want to contend take gambles, gearing their spending so that they'd recoup it if they get to the second round.

That's what needs to change. Or you de-link revenues from player costs.

I'd be down with cutting a number of regular-season games off the end of the schedule and having a play-in tournament for the 5th-12th seeds. 8 teams per conference play 5-game series, producing 4 winners who proceed to the "real" playoffs. That effectively expands the playoff bracket by 50% without having pointless 1-vs-12 scenarios.

The major flaw is that the very bottom and very top seeds are losing home dates, without any good way to replace them.

I think it would be a good idea to give the worst placed teams first pick when choosing young talent so that they can turn themselves into successful teams.

Oh wait..

I wouldn't have a problem with seeing a 7-10 play-in best-of-three, but that's about it. As it is, over half the teams make the playoffs. If, in 10 years, you can't make the playoffs more than once, I'd suggest that the problem lies with ownership and management.

The CBA actually granted the NHL that option in '05-'06 and '06-'07, but the League opted not to exercise that option.

The League may still implement a Playoff Qualification Round with the consent of the NHLPA.

CBA Article 16.2 said:
16.2 Playoff Games. The NHLPA has consented to granting the League, either in the
2005-06 NHL Season, or, alternatively, in the 2006-07 NHL Season, the option to
institute in any League Year a "Playoff Qualification Round" preliminary to the Playoffs,
which will consist of one (1) round involving four (4) Clubs in each Conference, with
each series in the round having a maximum of three (3) games, with the winner of each
series advancing to the Playoffs.
If the League institutes a Playoff Qualification Round
in either 2005-06 or 2006-07, the parties agree to thereafter jointly evaluate and discuss
such experience. If the League desires to implement a Playoff Qualification Round with
respect to future NHL Season(s), it may only do so with the consent of the NHLPA,
which shall not be unreasonably withheld. The Playoffs will consist of four (4) rounds,
with each series in each round having a maximum of seven (7) games.
