I think it's an interesting comparison for a number of reasons. First off because while games played is usually a huge determining factor for goalies, regular season + playoffs balances out to about the same (low 80s for games played). Hasek has the leg up for save percentage and GAA vs. his peers, but I think it's difficult to argue that Thomas doesn't have him for a better playoffs, especially considering what he did in the Cup Final. Both up their game ever so slightly from regular season to playoffs regardless though.

I don't really see an argument for Thomas to be honest other than a better cup final, but he almost cost the Conference final

He stepped up when it mattered against Tampa, responding excellently after every bad game. Look at wins 2-4 of that series. Wins 10-16 that run he had a .984 save % and allowed as many goals as he had shutouts during that run (4).

Came to say "what about 2012 Quick" before realizing he was a mere mortal at nearly a full hundredth below those guys in the regular season, good grief! Amazing seasons.

That's a tough one. I'm leaning towards Thomas

The way I remember it, Thomas had a pretty solid team in front of him - even if they started slow against the Canucks.

Bergeron, Lucic, Krejci, Marchand, Chara, Horton, Recchi, hell, even a (very) green Tyler Seguin.

Dominik Hasek WAS the Buffalo Sabres.

Their playoff leading scorers that year were Alexei Zhitnik and Jason Woolley. Two defencemen.

Hasek carried the team, while Thomas, although a critical reason for his teams success, did not have the same impact

I go with hasek

This table speaks volumes. They were virtually even in ES save percentage but Hasek was much better on the PK. The reason Thomas's save percentage is higher overall is he faced much fewer shots on the PK (which are more dangerous - only 15%, compared to 24% for Hasek). It's not Hasek's fault that the Bruins were much more disciplined than his Sabres.

Not that save percentage is a perfect metric - but he was higher above the league average than Thomas, while facing a less favourable mix of ES vs PK shots against. That's a pretty strong argument in his favour.

Hasek. Better compared to league average in the regular season and he put up virtually the same numbers on a far worse team for relative comparison. Thomas' season is still the best season in the last decade and he was basically the closest thing we saw to Hasek in that season no doubt.
