Toronto was built on skill, and speed. Our 3-4 scoring/skilled lines was supposed to make us successful. Our underlying numbers was supposed to take us far. Our smaller / skilled players were supposed to take advantage of other teams.

In the "New NHL" we were supposed to beat the Boston Bruins.

Why did TOR lose that series in "the new NHL"?

How.can Dubas justify what this team has become?

We were "outgritted". Toronto could not get scoring chances in the high % zone in front oft he net. Refs still will not call penalties in the playoffs as they should. The new NHL is different in the playoffs. It's fast but it requires size and toughness. Matthews has no one to play with and he was not utilized by Babcock as he should have been.

We out hit them, we out skated them, we out chanced them.

We didn't out play our Stars with them.

Blame Babcock.

What does that even mean? We're a good team who lost a tight battle with a slightly better team.

Dubas designed TOR the new way and we lost the old way.

It doesn't surprise me at all. I remember Leaf teams that knew how to win a playoff series. They looked much different than what we have now.

Dubas has a lot of explaining to do.

He has to answer for this losing team and their playoff futility. If it's all on Babcock then he has to explain to everyone why he stood behind him.

You people do realize that firing Babs is his final move. If TOR falls next year it'll be him that gets fired.

You think Dubas will be fired after two seasons as GM?

Lol.

The "new NHL" has shifted to a more speed and skill oriented game. Toronto's failure to adjust to the modern day game in this post-season can be attributed to three main factors.

1. Babcock is yesterday's coach, the game has passed him by. Look no further than the deployment of Matthews during game 7.
2. Dubas overcompensated with speed and skill. Dubas didn't regard other key factors save for Muzzin. Boston, NYI, Columbus possess a better balance.
3. As Duffman pointed out when all things are equal the harder working team wins in the end. Safe to say everyone is not on board.

Yes. If a team keeps losing, you've already fired your coach, who goes next? It's not the equipment manager.

How's your short-term memory?
Who got fired after Wilson?
Who got fired after Carlyle?

I don't believe there is such thing called the new NHL during the playoffs.

Even back in the 80s, in the conference and cup finals teams got very defensive and you often see very tight checking games even in that high scoring era.

If during the regular season the Leafs played the way Boston did in this series, they would of set a record for most penalties!
Dubas idea that the League is leaning towards less physical type players doesn't apply to 'playoff hockey'...not sure what he will do. Perhaps look for a more balanced line up of guys who can play physical,or maybe hire a coach that is willing to take advantage of having all star caliber players by actually playing them ?

To stay on topic,
I would say that we are not currently in "the new NHL" era. Seattle has been announced but won't be playing for another couple seasons. Once they are in, collective bargaining contract will end the following year with more changes coming.
We will enter "the new nhl" in 2022 or 2023. I would expect the announcements to be made at the draft.. stay tuned.

I find the speed and skill and new NHL talk to be fairly arrogant. Is the idea to dangle, curl and drag snipe, drop pass every team in the league out of the building?

Every team is fast. I don’t think the Leafs are faster and they’re certainly not more skilled. They have a couple of high end skilled players but there are a lot of guys that are in between.
