Pete Rose has a valid point for once

Think Pete Rose has something to say about baseball jumping in bed with gamblers? You bet he does

"I guess what it comes down to is baseball is now in bed with the same people who got me kicked out of the game," Rose said. "They can say what they want but this is all about money. You're telling me the managers have to submit their lineups to the league office so the casino can set the lines on the games? What happens if right before game time your starting pitcher has a cramp and has to be scratched? Is the manager gonna get blamed for that ... for screwing up the line?"

Regardless of how MLB chooses to spin this — as a practical move on their part, brought about by a Supreme Court decision that was out of their control — Rose would be justified in saying they are hypocrites for cashing in on gambling while still keeping him out of the game and ineligible for the Hall of Fame because he bet on baseball. Now everyone can be betting on baseball and you can forget about those "No Betting" signs that used to adorn every ballpark

I've never met the guy, so I won't judge his morality or honesty. His playing career, though, is easy to judge as HOF worthy. The punishment has gone on long enough, especially since the MLB clearly no longer frowns upon gambling.

Pretty sure they still more than just frown upon players and managers gambling though. That’s the difference

And there has been legal gambling on baseball for ages, the caveat being that it was only in Las Vegas, the changes are just due to several more states starting to permit it.

Fair enough, this doesn't really have much impact on his HOF case. But the guy is 77, the all time hits leader and has been banned for 30 years from baseball, except for when they needed to make money off him. I don't understand who still benefits from him being banned for life from the sport he devoted his life to.

The point is that he isn't benefiting from it

This and while nobody does it, sometimes you need to separate the player from the person. He was a great player but obviously a very flawed individual. Him being a degenerate gambler shouldn't prevent him from being inducted into Cooperstown.

what keeps him out of cooperstown isn't that he's a degenerate gambler.

what keeps him out of cooperstown is the fact that he was betting on baseball games he was playing and managing in.

those two are not the same thing. the fact that rose made this statement is proof that he continues to not understand that. there has always been gambling in and on and around baseball. mlb understands that as most everyone does. you're just not supposed to gamble on games in which you're involved in the outcome i'm not sure what's so difficult to understand about that.

He did those because he was a degenerate gambler.

US is the land of 2nd chances. Instead of admitting decades ago that he was a gambler and needed help he vehemently denied all allegations and even insulted the people who accused him of doing it.

You can't change your mind 30 years later when you want to sell a book and expect to be forgiven. Every single game he played and managed in had it's integrity compromised. He made his bed and will die without ever getting into the hof.

Correction: You're not to supposed to get caught.

I really doubt Pete Rose is the only person to have done this.

Tim Donaghy got caught right when he/his backers shut the whole operation down. Would have made off scot free. Different sport but still.
Plus the FBI suspected there were other corrupt refs but the NBA leaked the story to kill the investigation.

This.

Pete Rose as a player, unreal. He chose to tarnish that. The guy will autograph a baseball for you for $50 that says "Sorry I bet on baseball - Pete Rose". It's sad really, what he could have been and what he is.

I still believe 61 is the record with Roger Maris. I want a signed baseball of McGwire "I'm sorry I cheated at baseball" autograph. Bonds probably could have done it without roids but we will never f***ing know for sure. Deep down I'm sure he's the best player who ever lived but I don't know for sure. That's what they do to themselves.

Now more than ever league needs to ensure a strong message on integrity when it comes to gambling. His on field success speaks for itself and is something no one will ever take away but the individual does not need to be honored in HoF.
