Sure why not ? Its just a number and the its not like the KHL needs to respect the fact that the NHL has retired #99 league wide ( which is still think is dumb but whatever )

This must be on part a combination of respect, shared genealogical backgrounds, and for tongue-on-cheek joke (healthy and fitting one).

Probably nobody in KHL do have any objections about this, they all get it and approve it. Its just a number, not retired league-wide in KHL (why would it be?), and if someone wears it, who could possibly be more fitting?

Good story. Nice topic. :)

Gretzky is a Russian / Belorussian name. Wayne Gretzky grandfather was from Belorussia. So Wayne himself is a partially Russian.

The name Belorussia means White Russia. It has nothing to do with people skin color. There is a lot of theories about the origin of the name. Most likely it was a religious division between christian and pagan parts of Russia. Christian part got a name "white", while pagan part named "dark". Christianity was stronger in the west, so western lands become known as White Russia. At the end Christianity won, so only White Russia name survived and transferred to the modern day country of Belarus.

Russian Jews best Russians. We spit on all other Russians especially white.

I kid. My family origins date back to some village in the Russian empire that is now part of the Ukraine.

Dat obsessionwith skin color in the West though... Nobody over here would even think in that direction.

That is complete nonsense. As there were also Red and Black Russias. The White Russia being the land controlled by the Moscow Grand Duchy, i.e. the more easten part actually. It had nothing to do with paganism except for maybe the color scheme connection to geographical directions deriving from some older cosmogony views.
