Looks like I'm doing an old Atlantic division tour. NYC to Pittsburgh to Philly. Haha! I want to live in a city where we don't have a rival hockey team so that I could root for another team.

Hey guys, so I started looking at apartments in Philly. One of them appears to be above (or two floors above) Butcher Bar. That kind of worries me from a noise level. Anyone ever been and know if it gets loud? It seems relatively classy so I doubt it gets too loud, but I still worry about that.

your actually about 2 blocks from the center RSQ , but if your 2 floors up you should be fine, not sure if you would want to add soundproof wall to really make it quiet, but i think you will be fine.

with you living in CC get to know septa buses and subways and the el

Thanks. I went apartment viewing today. I went from being worried that I wouldn't like anything to seriously considering 4 places. Do you guys know the area that's N12th and Pearl st? I keep hearing that it's not ideal but up and coming. The apartments in the building and building are really nice.

Up and coming is always a nice buzz-phrase for someone trying to get someone else into a place.

But if said people are being honest, that might have something to do with it being just north of the Vine st. Expressway, and traffic might be of consideration. I haven't been around there in a while, but I don't remember it being that bad. It's also within walking distance of the convention center, and one of my favorite Japanese-style places, Yakitori Boy, which I consider a plus.

It isn't "always" a buzz-phrase for that.

Quite a few places in Philadelphia that I know of are up and coming and they legit are. My friend bought a house in Northern Liberties-- and his area is pretty nice now.

In addition, as UPENN expands south of Grey's Ferry bridge, that real estate is going to be worth a ton. It is sketch now, but even as far back as 5 years ago that real estate started to shoot up in price. UPENN completed the Pennovation Center and the Working Dog Center (I had my dog trained there). I considered finding the funds to scoop and flip a few houses there-- or just split a house so I could have an apt close to work while the tenant covers the mortgage for me. heh.

the corners of N 12 and Pearl, thats right at the 676 vine st highway. Your right by broad st and roman catholic HS. which also puts you right by the broad street subway best way to get around town. Heck you are in walking distance of city hall.

they pretty much have rebuilt the northern liberties area, everything and cost of living has gone up.

also sugar hill the casino right by the river about few blocks from you, runs a free shuttle from CC to the casino, it basically is a nice free way to get around town. between that and septa you will no traffic to deal with. heck if you have any nights at a bar and get absolutely hammered uber will be your best friend and rides in CC are cheap like 6 bucks cheap.

I use to get hammered back in the day at finnigans wake 3rd and spring garden, not far from 12th n pearl.

not sure when you going to move, but 12 n pearl will be fine.

Thanks guys for the help. I decided to go with a place on 23rd and Walnut. It's 6 minutes from my job by foot and is supposed to be a really nice area. Also cheaper than the place I mentioned (though the apartment and building weren't anywhere close).

Question: from the Broad Street line is it possible to get to Cheesesteak Corner (AKA Pat's and Geno's)? If so how?

I frequently take the BSL down to the Federal station and walk the opposite way to go to the American sardine bar.

So yes, it's like 5 numbered streets over from the Federal station at 9th and Wharton (between Wharton and Federal).

Easy walk.

One might ask why though? Plenty of better cheesesteaks.

Just want to go there because I've only been to each once. I am aware that a lot of locals think Tony Luke's and Jim's (among others) are better (I'm partial to Luke's from my days of going to the ECW Arena and the Murphy Rec Center for wrestling shows).

Fair enough man!

Check out the Italian Market while you are at it. And maybe pip over to Sabrina's Cafe if you get a chance. One of the best brunch spots in the city.

Maybe to coincide with the hockey season, this thread will be closed since it is approaching 1,000 posts. The opening post may or may not need updated content even though it has been modified since originally implemented.

That's always a weird thing for me. I'm a Ranger fan too and grew up loathing the Flyers, but Philly is one of my favorite cities/areas. Because of the sports, I probably couldn't live there though. It's gotta be somewhere with a neutral team.

I was just in Philly last week and had an absolute blast. The history is second to none (sorry Boston), the food scene is nuts and the nightlife was extremely vibrant. I also take the time to visit outside the usual spots and go to places in NW, NE and W Philadelphia. Tons of great neighborhoods that people have no idea about.

My friend and I walked all the way down East Passyunk last Saturday night and bar hopped too. One of the best nightlife/dining scenes in any city. Philly is so incredibly underrated and I don't understand why, but it seems like they want to keep it that way.

Question about SEPTA though.

Does the commuter rail have better coverage than within the city? Like the suburbs have more access than the actual city itself?

I did some research and center city seems to be the plAce! Just hard to find a hotel who dont cost 500$/night!

The airport properties generally are less expensive than center city; however, you sacrifice cost for location. Did you check any popular discount hotel sites for possible deals?

I checked the Courtyard at the Navy Yard for that weekend without knowing your specific travel dates and it is listed at approximately $309 night on their site. http://www.marriott.com/hotels/trav...YLP&scid=45f93f1b-bd77-45c9-8dab-83b6a417f6fe

There's better nightlife in Fishtown than Center City, but I don't know of any hotels within easy walking distance. Nearest I can think of would be on Delaware Ave.
