If he's a very good #2 Center why trade him?

The board can't seem to decide if he's got trade value or not.

If he's a very good #2C, you trade him because this team is very thin on forwards (especially young ones) who can put the pick in the net and generate offense. We already have a younger 2C in Henrique. If the Devils score a 1C (more likely by draft than by trade), keeping Zajac is much less important.

Moving Henrique down to the 3rd line is a waste of his talent. Paying Zajac that contract for that long to be a 3C might be a luxury but it's also silly and will be counterproductive. Since we don't have a lot of tradable pieces that other teams could use, he becomes available.

If he has value, it's because he's a great two-way, #2 C who's only 29, can handle big minutes, isn't injury-prone and has a great attitude and leadership skills. Well, wow! That's a player I want to keep around during a rebuild. No questions asked.

...or...

He's a #3 C with an insane, albatross contract, in which case his trade value isn't much higher than David Clarkson.

Take your pick.
