Stanley Cup will be heading back to Trenčín once again this year with Chára on one team and Hossa on the other. Let's not forget that Michal HandzuÅ¡ is on Chicago, a native of Banská Bystrica.

Pretty cool seeing there are only 12 Slovaks left in the NHL.

10 years ago there were 30.

20 years ago there were 5.

It's kinda strange. During the WC you can see at the international tourneys board that there's plenty of Slovak posters on hfboards.

Yet on this sub it's the same few of us who post here, Kamzik (though he hasn't been around much lately), TrasherFan, now petoNHL etc.

It's almost as if the other posters don't know that this sub exists.

Cool. Then it is a little bid surprising, that Slovak Extraleague has so low attendances.

Is it truly surprising? For one thing the majority of people who watch the Worlds are 2 weeks hockey fans, who watch it because it has become an integral part of the country's culture over the years. For the other 50 weeks of the year these people have different interests. Then you have to consider that it is a) much easier to watch games for free in front of your TV than going to the rink (where you feel like the roof will fall on your head in some cities) and pay for that and what you get to see is on a much lower level than the Worlds, because even most of the weakest teams at the Worlds have players from better leageus than the Extraliga.

But perhaps the biggest difference is in the hype machine I mentioned in my previous post. When the time for the Worlds to be played comes around all the mainstream media are full of information, articles and reports about the tournament, whether we're talking about print, radio or TV and all the shops start selling stuff like jerseys, shirts, scarfs, Coca Colas with pictures of players.

With the Extraliga all you get is regular reports about the scores/rankings and some small reports, whatever else is published about the Extraliga it's 99% negative.

You can't live (or just visit) Slovakia during the Worlds and not realise that the Worlds are played. You can easily live here and never know that the top league is currently called Tipsport Extraliga, I doubt that most Slovaks could even name all the teams that played in the league this year, yet alone the players on these teams. Most people here would probably know that Gaborik played for Slovakia at this years' Worlds, I doubt anywhere near as many people would know that Stumpel played in Nitra and Handzus in Banska Bystrica this season.

There seems to be a lot happening these last few days.

First Martin Marinčin joined Richard Pánik in Toronto during the second draft day.

Then Marko Daňo was shipped off to Chicago. I am not quite sure how I feel about that. It will be extremely hard to get ice-time or even stay in the NHL for him there the next season.

And now Andrej Sekera signs a 6 year deal with the Edmonton Oilers as a free agent.

Meanwhile in the KHL, forward Radovan Puliš from Zvolen (best goal scorer of the regular season in Slovak league) is on a try-out with Medveščak Zagreb.

The Toronto Maple Leafs now have two Slovaks on their roster (Richard Panik and Martin Marincin). The last time they had two Slovaks on their roster was 1986-87 with Peter Ihnacak and Miroslav Ihnacak. The season before they had three: Peter Ihnacak, Miroslav Ihnacak and Marian Stastny.

Bumping this very old thread, but F Samuel Bucek (1998) from Nitra follows in Michal Kristof's footstep and will play in Liiga for KooKoo. Detroit has invited him to their pre-season camp and they played a role in this transfer.
