After Dale Arnold’s censorship on the Dale & Keefe show, Jermaine “Wiggy” Wiggins joined Matt Kalman and Ken Laird on The Skate Podcast to discuss his radical idea in full: trading Patrice Bergeron.

While reflecting on the Bruins' season, Wiggy asked the basic question, “how do you make this team better?” In taking a look at the biggest struggles Boston had last season, one topic came to mind: first line production.
“So I asked (Dale) the question: What about putting Bergeron on the trading block?” Wiggy asked. “You would be able to get something back for him and something tremendous for his value.”

Though, Dale wanted nothing to do with the possibility.

“He completely shut that down. I mean it was like I basically, to the point where I slapped one of his kids,” Wiggy continued.

Finally having free rein on The Skate Podcast, he walked Laird and Kalman through his thinking.

I heard the discussion between Wiggy and Dale when it happened.

First; I’d rule out nothing when it comes to trading players. It’s cliche, but as the saying goes “Wayne Gretzky was traded.”.

Second; If you deal Bergeron, you’re absolutely punting on the present. Is it safe to say Bergeron is at/entering the latter half of his prime? What does he look like next year? The year after? Still great value most likely, but trending downward, right?

So, if you move Bergeron, you need to move other parts too and it probably means getting worse in the short term before you get better.

I’m not totally against it because, in a cap world, you have to be open to anything.

As presently constituted, they’re in the mix. It feels like the play here is to bring back (mostly) the same team and take another crack at the thing. If you’re in the mix at the deadline, maybe you add a piece or two. If it’s not looking promising, you can always deal later in the process.

The way Dale handled it and dismissed Wiggy was just another example of Dale being a dink at times especially if someone threatens to dive into his hockey world.

You don't trade guys who are playing well above their contracts. It doesn't make sense, no matter where they are age-wise or career-wise. Do it and you are all but guaranteed to either (1) promote from within and have a noticeable downgrade where said player played, (2) pay more money for less production or (3) pay the same or less money for significantly less production. With a guy like Bergy, you are also losing sooooo much more than just his production on the ice. Good luck replacing all that.

Yeah, even at soon to be 34, he is still the #1 center, #1 power play bumper, best penalty killing forward, best faceoff guy, and alternate, uh, co-captain. And he just had a career year in points despite missing a bunch of games with a significant injury.

At this point I'm a little concerned about the groin injury as he's had issues with that for several years, but I wouldn't trade him.

The fact is that Bergeron brings far more value to this team now and in the future than anything you'd get in a trade for him. Just doesn't make any sense.

It's not going to happen until he asks out (which isn't going to happen either.)

But for the sake of stirring the pot - would you trade him for Malkin straight up? Maybe Malkin plus a high pick?

If Eichel is the return I’d be interested.

This^

It all depends on the return. If Sweeney phone rings and he gets overwhelmed with an offer you do it. I love bergy he's been a true warrior and has had a HOF career, but if someone offered a fair deal, that made the Bruins better tomorrow and 5 years down the road, I'd trade anyone, except Orr.

If the value is there and it improves the franchise then sure.

If you’re just doing it to move to the next era of cup windows, see above.

I can't believe this is being discussed on this board, on some podcast I've never heard of, on the radio, in the world. The lunacy involved here is mind-blowing. Wiggy is dumb as a brick and Dale did the right thing. When you see a friend about to drive drunk, you take his keys and call him an Uber.

Would you trade Bergeron for Mcdavid?

Buffalo calls and says “you know what, we really need some leadership on this team. What would it take for Bergeron?” Sweeney replies “Eichel and Dahlin” and Buffalo says okay let’s do it..you say no?
