Dr Strangekirk, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Not Having a 3C

Who starts 4C? If I remember correctly, HCMS pretty much said Bluegar had to get stronger. McClement seems like an option but an option that isn't likely. Rowney is obvious choice but McKeeg is looking good. With the Pens I like it we play with 3 Pking Centers in the lineup etc:Bonino, Cullen, Fehr. That seems unlikely because a Rowney-McKeeg-Reaves line would be god awful offensively but good defense-wise.

I really wish Athanasiou would just re-sign already so the Penguins could trade for Sheahan.

I disagree. I hope this drags on longer so that the Pens can still evaluate other options and hopefully not settle for him. Sheahan is the Wings' 15th or so highest paid player per cap, why are they so eager to get rid of him if he has any value? You'd think they would try to shed salary elsewhere.

If one of the worst teams treats him like a cap dump I don't want the Pens to even bother. It speaks volumes that he is their designated cap casualty.

I hope people realize that McClement - Reaves would be a Adams - Glass level pairing at forward. We'd better pray a young guy takes that spot.

I really don't see the Reaves-Glass parallel.

I'm sure they have tried. But when you hand out a bunch of ****** contracts, you do not have that many options. Almost half their team (10 players) have contracts with more than 3 years remaining. Their players fall into one of 3 categories: Can't afford to move due to how good they are or are needed, can't move due to terrible contract/play, do not make enough to matter. Sheahan is one of the very few exceptions. Had a terrible season, but his contract is very reasonable, which means they can move him. And his cap hit is high enough to actually make a difference to their cap issues.

Let's just take Zetterberg so Wings can shed that much cap.

Crosby
Malkin
Zetterberg (Or for us it would be Zetterburgh)

There is your 3C, there is your defensive forward who is good at faceoffs and can help with offense too. Big upgrade on Bonino and they can eat 1M of his cap hit, they save 5M and can easily keep AA and give him what he wants and still trade Sheahan if they need to.

Boom.

Ah yes, gotta make that Glass-Vitale-Adams replica.

I think Wilson - Rowney - Reaves will be a hell of a 4th line.

I think Wilson - Rowney - Reaves will be a hell of a 4th line.

In what way? Punishing, physical and entertaining? Absolutely. Able to chip in timely goals? Maybe. One that will score on a semi consistent basis? Unlikely.

Last year Wilson, Cullen, Rowney and Kuhnhackl scored 24 goals - with Cullen picking up over half of them (13). So while I think there's going to be several different reasons to like that line... it's "offensive prowess" will not be one of them. This isn't going to be a #3B type of line... it's going to be a pure 4th line with speed and physical play. Hopefully the rest of our top 9 is able to make up for it.

I really don't see the Reaves-Glass parallel.
Guys with no skill whatsoever who get praised because they hit people. Reaves hits people harder and he's fast, which are both important distinctions to people who think professional athletes are afraid of their opponents. The speed part should be an important distinction to anyone, since even if you expect Reaves to contribute nothing at all to winning hockey (like I do), at least Reaves will be around the puck more, which is almost always a net positive.

When did it become board gospel that we needed our 4th line to be as productive as a 3rd line?

Since we won 2 Cups with Matt Cullen scoring like a 3C and his wingers trailing a little behind.

Gotta say that, while we don't need it, it was useful and entertaining, and I'll be sad to see it go if it does. Part of that is inevitable with no more Cullen of course.

A lot depends on how good Reaves is when he gets used to the system. I don't want to rush into judgement but hearing about how he was looking unfit is the last thing I wanted to hear. If he can keep up with our system, he'll get points due to sheer intensity and tempo. If he can't, things will look patchy.
