The Worst Sports Franchise Owner in North America Is in Ottawa

More of his unscrupulous business deals..

Melnyk may have “saved” Ottawa from bankruptcy in 2003, but from the start, much of his wealth was tied to his pharmaceutical company, Biovail, which had been plagued by issues for years. (A 1998 Forbes article described Melnyk as “a smooth, well-tailored entrepreneur with only a medical publishing background, who has made a number of announcements about his company’s pending drugs that have yet to prove true.”)

The same year Melnyk bought the Senators and their arena for $92 million, he also told investors—fraudulently, it was later ruled—that subpar Biovail profits were a result of a fatal truck accident in Illinois that had delayed shipments. Over the years Melnyk has relied on a daisy chain of loans to finance the Senators, the most recent being a $135 million line of refinanced credit announced in the summer of 2018.

Two criteria for top notch owner:
1) Spends whatever is needed to create a championship caliber club, on players, front office, etc. Keeps spending even if he is running losses (because the best owner is a guy worth $50 billion and does not give a crap about losses).

2) Does not meddle in club management decisions. Hires well regarded coaches and roster managers, gives them all the resources they need, and lets them do their jobs.

A problem in one of these areas will mean long term trouble for fans. Melnyk completely fails both these criteria and even gets a crossover bonus failure point since he meddles in the roster to the objective of saving money instead of the usual I think I'm smarter than my manager reason.

Town NHL hates !
The more I read about Melnyk the clearer it becomes that the guy shouldn't be a team owner. The guy is a real piece of work, and the Sens and their fans deserve better.

Yep, but the way our great league functions, unless there are criminal charges, they have no ground nor power to destitute him.

The only legal way would be the league knowing which amunt of cash would make Melnyk sell and having an prospect owner aproach the league with said amount in play.

Do the Senators still fly to road games or do they now take the Greyhound?

I'm not even sure I'm joking when I ask this.:dunno:

Is it true he had the hot water shut off in the arena?

God knows I don't want to defend this guy. They haven't shut off hot water. the 100 level have hot water in their bathrooms and I know for sure one of the ones in the 200 level has it too...but the rest of the washrooms have fairly cold water. This has been the case of many many years, even before Melnyk came on board.

Wow, even having heard so much about Melnyk over the years, there was way more content in this article than I was expecting.

He really is the closest thing to Ballard that we could ever have expected to see again.
That article doesn't even mention the #MelnykOut Billboards fans funded either.

Here's a pretty complete list of all things that happened the past few years (long thread)
