This is one of the more interesting pieces of analysis I have seen in a while:

Seems to show that regular season success is linked to payroll (the scatter diagram), but that is less the case with the Cup winner. The cup winner in the last few years has sometimes been in the top tier of payroll (2001 COL, 2002 DET, 2010 CHI, 2011 BOS) but has just as often been a middle of the pack team in terms of payroll (2004 to 2008). I guess that proves the 'anything can happen" adage of the payoffs.
