At the Cougars-Giants game--Olson on the ice every other shift. Plays a strong two way game, jumps in on offence effectively, and has the smooth skating long stride to get back to cover for his (and his partner's mistakes).

But how are the other aspects of Olson's game? Stats only tell one side of the story.

Tate Olson's NHLe sky rocketed from 8 NHLe in his draft year to 20.5 NHLe in his draft +1 year :amazed:

From tonight's viewing, he doesn't seem like a "dynamic offensive defenceman"--he runs the first unit power play and had a solid passing
game, but I haven't seen a ton of shiftiness or dynamic puck movement out of him.

What he is, however, is almost always on the right side of the puck defensively. He makes quick, crisp passes to set the play going the other way, and is out there every other shift. I'd say if his game makes the jump, it would be as a low-event third pairing defender with a decent outlet pass.

His skating was supposed to be somewhat of a negative, so it's good to hear that it seems to be
at least OK now.

Keep us posted.

Primary assist for Olson on the power play. Made a quick pass to the point for a one timer.

Another really nice primary assist for Olson. Spin move to get past his check from the right point, then passes for the nice setup.

Meanwhile, with two assists tonight for Sherbrooke, fifth round pick Carl Neill moves into third place for scoring for defencemen in the Q: 33 gp, 5 goals, 29 assists. (6'3", 206 lbs, shoots right)

A few more notes on Olson tonight:

- Stood up a lot of plays at the blue line with smart use of his stick. Generally a smart player

- In regards to his speed, he's definitely not a burner, but he gets around the ice just fine. Was lugging a few times late in the third, but understandable given the fact that he played close to half the game.

- Was relied upon in all situations. Out there for the last minute. Lots of faith from the Coach.

- not the most physical player, but uses his body when he needs to definitely has an nhl frame.

- I'd say he was the best defenceman on the Cougars, and probably one of the better skaters in the game. The Giants could get very little done against him 5 on 5. Consistently skates the puck out of trouble or made a smart quick pass to move the play the other way, often resulting in a shot on goal for the Cougars.

- As stated before, his offensive game isn't very flashy for the most part, but he makes solid plays all shift on the power play.

Kevin Connauton had 72 points in 69 games in his draft+ 1 year. Though he was a 19 year old , he was dominant in the WHL. Stats are the last thing i care about as a dman , as long as they are respectable.

Kevin Connauton is also a NHL player.

If Tate Olson can become as good as Connauton that's a huge win, especially for a 7th round pick.

For some context, Olson is putting up a PPG comparable to Morgan Rielly at the same age and better than recent 1st and 2nd rounders like Myers, Hamonic, Reinhart, Dumba, Cowen, Severson, Mueller, Pysyk at the exact same age. That's pretty impressive!

Stats aren't everything, but they are important. A player that doesn't put up points in juniors, even as a defenseman, seldom becomes an NHL player. Most NHL players put up numbers in juniors and Olson is on the right track to develop into an NHL player.

I don't see how that's a bad thing by any means. Connauton is an NHL player who puts up adequate points for a defenceman of his calibur, which can't be said about the vast majority of 7th rounders. If Olson turns into Connauton, it's a success.

The vast majority of NHLers, including defensemen, were very productive junior players. I didn't know much about Olsen before we drafted him, but as of right now he looks to be on the right track. I haven't seen him so I'm not sure if he has a projectable skillset as well, but the stats are very encouraging,

Very glad that we didn't get another Stewart.

Isn't the most important stat for evaluating junior defenseman their icetime?

The best players will always have the highest TOI because they are trusted the most. Can't remember where I got this from. Might have been some developmental article.
