I agree with Rory that I think the majors should be more spread out. 4 in 4 months is just too much.

Not sure how though (especially if they want to end the season with the tour finals and be done before football starts).

Maybe one earlier in the year, or end the season earlier and have the first event of the new season be the PGA Championship the week before the NFL starts.

The PGA should be in October or November. Golf is a global game. Why does the NFL schedule matter?

I didn't even watch the PGA Championship in May this year as a counterpoint. Too much in May with baseball, NHL, NBA ( don't care, but many do) playoffs and the fact that it's spring so I don't want to be inside anyway. That's the real loser for viewing for me.

They said they were fine with the spring schedule because they could play in more places weather wise, but other than a couple in Texas going out until 2034, there all in places you can play May to October anyway.

I still think the Tour Championship should be Labor Day, at the earliest. Run it Friday to Monday. Other than Saturday, there's not much competition for TV.

To the PGA, TV ratings. I know, myself, being an avid football fan, I watched way more of the final 2 weeks this year than in any other year. It is not just the NFL. its also college football they want to avoid on Saturdays.

The TV ratings revolve around whose in contention. They can't artificially make the TV ratings good or bad.

I agree that the majors being done by July this year felt weird. For whatever reason, I've never watched the "fall" tournaments the PGA has. To me a season should always be that year starting with the Tournament of Champions first week of January and end after the Ryder Cup/President's Cup. Heck my one and done pool only plays Sony - Tour Championship.

This season as a whole seems even more spread out this year with the President's Cup not even being until December and well into the the 2019-20 season.

Wow I forgot golf was an Olympic sport again. I wonder if the top players are coming

It's also insane how quickly 4 years can fly by...the Olympics, WC and Euro Cup are reminders of that

I liked the new schedule
I like how the majors are now lined up from least prestigious to most prestigious
given their obvious concern with ratings and other sports, I think this is the best they can do.

I get your point but I don't think they would consider The Masters the least prestigious, especially over the PGA?

In this post-Tiger world it seems that we only care about the majors. At the end of the year if a player is #1 in the World Golf rankings, isn't he THE PGA TOUR PLAYER of the YEAR?

Chappell fired a 59 today in just his second round back from back surgery after a +1 opening round yesterday. Great way to comeback there.

Watching the post-round interview, some interesting parts:
  • The PGA is making him say every club he hit on every shot of the round in his post round interview hahaha
  • He believes that a ball only has 1 birdie in it so every time he makes one he switches to a new ball. But, he only brings as many balls in his bag as he has had birdies in a round previously in his career. Since this was the most he's every made, he had to reuse a ball on 8 & 9 so tomorrow he's going to bring an extra.
  • He lost all of his clothing sponsors with the injury so some brand called GFORE gave him some yellow gloves to use for the tournament. The yellow glove was odd he said because he doesn't people to know what he does for a living when he leaves the golf course so he usually wears bland colors to not bring attention to himself.

Danny Willett will move ahead of Jordan Spieth in the next OWGR postings due to him winning the BMW PGA in Europe. You couldn't have seen that coming 12 months ago.

Romo went out and shot -2 today. Good for a T28. Better than Thomas, Matsuyama, Snedeker and Phil to name a few.

Hot-take (I think): Morikawa is the best and will be the best golfer of the Wolff, Hovland and Morikawa trio that had success right after turning pro last season.

His ball-striking is crazy good, and he has no holes in his game. He might never have the McIlroy, Scott, Fleetwood swing that always gets talked about as the swing to model your game on, but his proximity to the hole is going to be elite with consistency. His misses on approach are so narrow.

Hovland reminds me of Rahm. Incredibly efficient TTG, very average once he gets near the green. Consistent, but lacks the top gear when he’s on. Wolff has that top gear, but his game needs refining. Hits it long and an above average putter, albeit streaky. Reminds me of a raw Koepka.

I’m not convinced any of these guys are the next superstar up there with the top 5 names in the sport, but I think Morikawa has a very high floor, and I see similarities in ball-striking and lack of holes to prime Rose.

One of the better Tiger stats. Absolutely no adjustment to the pro game. Best player in the world the second he went from amateur to professional.
