Since the 97-98 season (97-98 included), of all the players who played at least 20 games in a season for Montreal, ONLY Alex Kovalev in 07-08 managed to stay above a point-per-game.

(see bottom of the post for proof)

This period covers the dead puck era and all eras since the 2005 lock-out, however you want to divide them.

In some years, scoring was low, in others (like this year) it was much higher.

That's 21 seasons if we include this one.

21 !!!

How many posters on this board aren't even 21 years old?

Compared to the rest of the league:

(Since 97-98, included)

Anaheim: 20 seasons over PPG
Arizona: 4 seasons over PPG
Boston: 14 seasons over PPG
Buffalo: 8 seasons over PPG
Calgary: 14 seasons over PPG
Carolina: 9 seasons over PPG
Chicago: 11 seasons over PPG
Colorado: 23 seasons over PPG
Columbus: 5 seasons over PPG
Dallas: 15 seasons over PPG
Detroit: 17 seasons over PPG

Florida: 5 seasons over PPG
Los Angeles: 12 seasons over PPG
Minnesota: 3 seasons over PPG
Montreal: 1 season over PPG
Nashville: 3 seasons over PPG
New Jersey: 15 seasons over PPG
NY Islanders: 6 seasons over PPG
NY Rangers: 8 seasons over PPG
Ottawa: 24 seasons over PPG
Philadelphia: 20 seasons over PPG
Pittsburgh: 46 seasons over PPG
San Jose: 14 seasons over PPG
St. Louis: 10 seasons over PPG
Tampa Bay: 20 seasons over PPG
Toronto: 14 seasons over PPG
Vancouver: 15 seasons over PPG

Winnipeg/ATL: 13 seasons over PPG

This is it! We are DEAD LAST in the entire league.

BRB, will verify that we aren't dead last in the league of all the teams that were active since 97-98

There are a number of cases, but the seemingly endless promise of the 2007-2008 team going down in flames within 14 months (lmao) is high on the list.

EDIT: talking about the franchise in general, not so much the laughable ppg stats

I understand all the shortcomings of PPG, but it's still the best measure of how offensively dominant a player is on the actual ice.And according to this metric, we're the worst franchise since 97-98 to ice offensively dominant players.

Kovalev played a season with vertigo, so his point per game dropped.

OK, but we're talking about a 21 years window. All teams will have injuries within such a long timeframe. And even if Kovalev had stayed above a PPG in his vertigo year, giving us two over-PPG seasons, we would STILL BE DEAD LAST.

Were we even that better post Lafleurs Habs ? Seems like we've been at the bottom of the league for high end offensive players for even longer than that.

PPG seasons were extremely common and benign prior to 97-98 (prior to the dead puck era).

Probably we were bad, but Turgeon, Damphousse, Naslund and the likes had PPG seasons.Too lazy to go back that far.

I see your point though. It truly is pathetic.I think the worst about all of this is the arrogance of the organization in pretending they know what they're doing, and that they should be given the benefit of the doubt as if they were still related to people who build the three dynasties and the winning culture.

The numbers are clear above; it is a loser culture, castrating and suffocating culture for anything related to offense.Defense is important, crucial, but offense is also important and someone should tell the bosses.

Exactly where the league want us. Sold out crowds revenue sharing for American expansion. All the while the talent is kept away

I wondered at times when I was barely lucid, if Bergevin is a double-agent working for Jeremy Jacobs

I mean, how can one explain away Therrien other than that theory or complete and utter stupidity?

Incompetent management is to blame.

What I want to see is a manager come in and ruffle some feathers. Offer sheets please. We have cap space, money, and a need for skill. We can’t sign players at UFA because nobody wants to pay the taxes. Don’t have assets to trade for them and always finish dead in the middle. Drafting mediocre players in mid first. We get two games of playoff revenue to boost year end bottom line. Rinse repeat
