Niskanen

The former Minnesota-Duluth star defenseman has really begun to blossom over the last two weeks. Since December 23rd, Niskanen, is averaging over 23 minutes of ice time per game, and has registered three points and a plus five plus/minus rating. Keep an eye on this promising 21-year-old rookie.

Johnny Boychuk was not in Sharks top10 list but this prospect made his debut in colorado. hopefully he stays there and Sharks get needed help to their defense.

Another Shark, who didnt reach top 10 list but should have, Spencer Machacek is playing more and more in WHL and still developing .. already scored last season points .. 41gms 21+22=43 so far.. lead Giants in points.

And most suprising has been undrafted small center ryan mcdonough who has scored 24+25 in 35 games in sakinaw spirit (OHL) .. will he be drafted?

swiss prospect Julien Sprunger has scored 31 points in 34 games so far this season what makes him the first of the Nashville Predators prospect to meet the requirement for the MD endorsement.

Obscure prospect of the Day:

Flames Goalie Anton Khudobin is STILL undefeated in the ECHL - 14 wins, no losses - and a league best .931 save percentage - and has been named to the ECHL All-Star team.

Khudobin is in his first pro season. Born in Khazakstan, Khudobin played with the Saskatoon Blades in 04/05, and started for Team Russia that year in the WJC. The 21 year old is a 7th Round draft pick of the Minnesota Wild in the NHL.

Wow great for Anton I watched him a lot with the Blades in what turned into a very disappointing post-season for them.

He has a lot of raw talent; just there were times when he had bad games, they were terrible games and they could get to his head. Was just thinking what happened with him a week or so ago, happy to see he is succeeding at a higher level.

I think you jinxed him, Matt. Khubodin suffered his first loss last night; only a couple hours after you posted this. ;)

Argh. :)

The hopes of a late game comeback were dashed when Marty Guerin beat Anton Khudobin on the power play at 16:15 to bring the score to 4-2 and send the Catters to their first regulation loss in approximately 80,640 minutes.

Khudobin made 18 saves for the Wildcatters who went 1-for-5 on the power play. South Carolina went 2-for-5.

80, 640 Minutes. :amazed:

Another European Prospect has scored enough to warrant 1 million of MD money for the Nashville Predators. Viktor Alexandrov has 12 goals and 18 assists in 39 games in the RSL so far.

Yet another Flames prospect has now joined the ranks of NHL player.

One of my fave pet projects, Pascal Pelletier, played his first game for the Boston Bruins. The AHL leading goal scorer played just under 10 minutes, had two hits and two shots and didn't look out of place (mind you it was against the Leafs).

I signed the undrafted Pelletier when he was a first year pro in 2005 still playing in the ECHL (prior to any AHL experience even).

Found a great story on his journey to the NHL:

The 5-11, 195-pounder drove ex-Bruins defenseman Hal Gill (6-7, 250) into the corner with enough force early in the third period to dislodge one of the metal supports holding the glass in place.

Make that 3, after Sprunger and Alexandrov, first round pick Jesse Joensuu has scored his 31st point of the season.
One prospect missing for full MD-payout and Jonathan Matsumoto is well on track to score more than 40 points in the AHL.

Ok, time to trump a few of my Blues prospects.

Aside from Dan Paille, Jared Boll, David Bolland, Dustin Byfuglien and Andrew Cogliano all establishing themselves as NHLers this season, the Blues are extremely pleased with two prospects in particular.

Jonas Enroth is currently leading the entire SEL in goaltending, with a league best in GAA (2.21) and Save Percentage (.930). Enroth also backstopped the Swedish WJC team to a silver medal and is posing a legitimate challenge to Alvaro Montoya for the moniker of "Blues Goalie of the Future".

Meanwhile, Teddy "Ball Game" Purcell has been amongst the lead leaders in AHL scoring as a rookie and was also named MVP of the AHL allstar game. He has been called up by the L.A. Kings twice and hopes to compete for a full-time roster spot in the NHL next season.

The bad news of so many young players making the NHL (or splitting time there like Bolland), means the Blues will likely only have two players meet the required milestones for the Mountain Due Award. The good news of course, is a new wave of players for the team to use next year who will all be under the rookie cap, making life in the Cap world a little easier for the Blues (not easy, just easier).

Update on the 5 Wild prospects who have had action in the NHL this year:

Kyle Brodziak-23 yrs old- 58 games-9 goals-10 assists. Three goals in his last two games. Great on the PK. Solid 3rd-4th liner

Steve Wagner-23 yrs old-24 games-2 goals-6 assists. With the backlog of blueliners in St Louis, Wagner wasn't expected to see NHL time this year, but he has played well when given the opportunity. Next year, with several current Blues expected to leave St Louis, Wagner should be an every day player

Clarke MacArthur-22 yrs old- 29 games-7 goals 7 assists. Buffalo doesn't seem to know exactly what to do with The General. He's played some top 6 time and some bottom 6 time up front. He's not GREAT at anything but neither is he bad at anything, which makes it easy to plug him in on any line.

Tyler Kennedy-21 years old-32 games-8 goals-4 assists. Named to Young Guns game, but missed due to mono. Very fast with grit to go with it and has nice hands. Would be a great fit with Crosby, if Therrien can ever figure that out.

Brandon Dubinsky-21 years old-59 games-9 goals 14 assists. MVP of the Young Guns game. Has centered the 2nd, 3rd and 4th line for the Rangers, and has played well when given more responsibility. Big kid with a nose for the net.

Expect at least 3 of these forwards to be playing for the Wild next season.

After leading his team to a win and a tie last weekend over then #1 Miami (Ohio), Michigan captain Kevin Porter had three assists in last night's game against Lake Superior State. Porter, who leads the NCAA in scoring, has led the Wolverines back to the top of the rankings and appears to be at the head of the pack for the Hobey Baker Award.

Kevin Porter's linemate Chad Kolarik scored all 4 goals in that game. He's now tied for 2nd in the league in scoring with fellow Avs prospect Nathan Gerbe. Both are also top candidates for the Hobey Baker Award. Kolarik has 19 points in the last 11 games. With 11 games remaining this season, Kolarik needs 18 points to reach Mountain Dew numbers..

Two Avs prospects who already cracked the MD requirements got points again tonight against the top team in FEL. Jori Lehterä assisted on the beautiful game winning goal by Jonas Enlund. The duo is now up in 37 and 40 points this season and are looking great together. Makes you wonder if NHL-Atlanta will draft Lehterä this summer and bring the duo over.

Brian Lee is also on pace for MD numbers in AHL with 3 goals and 22 assists for 25 points in 53 games. Lee needs 6 more points for the MD.

Due to the fact that I'm not allowed to drive anywhere, I've seen almost all of Michigan's last three games. Kolarik has been very impressive, as have Max Pacioretty and Aaron Palushaj.

Dubi has been playing great the last couple months. He's developed into one of the Rangers best forwards. You're right - he is going to be really good. Love the physical aspect tp his game as well and he definitely isn't afraid to drop the gloves.

Maybe I'm hoping I can grab a Nigel Dawes compliment here....but has Dawes' play the last month or so been related to Dubinsky? They seem to play a lot together and well.

It was Avery/Dubi/Jagr today. Renney has juggled quite a bit, so everyone has played with everyone, but Dubi/Jagr seem to be together now and Avery makes that line super tough to play.

I guess I'll just have to wait for Sean G to praise Dawes independently then. :P

There's precious little to cheer about in Jackets-land this season, but here goes:

Brian Boyle has made a good impression so far in his first taste of the NHL, posting 4 goals and 1 assist for 5 points in 8 games, to go with 4 pim and an impressive +4. Brian's been playing as a center so far, but has just agreed to an entry-level deal with Columbus in the HFNHL, initially as a defenceman (he's played both positions as a pro this year). At 6-6/248 (his official stats list him at 222, but he's been quoted as heavier in recent interviews), he's a tough young man to play against. He has the makings of a third-line power-pivot in the Primeau/Otto mould with upside, if he can increase his intensity.

John Curry with the WBS Penguins is 3rd in the AHL in goals against with a pleasing 2.16m to go with a .911 save % -- not bad for his first pro season.

Wisconsin Badger blueliners Ryan McDonagh and Brendan Smith have each put up 12 points in their freshman season, while Badgers' sophomore checker Blake Geoffrion has 25 points in 28 games. Freshman power-winger Max Pacioretty has done Geoffrion one better, managing 27-in-27 for Michigan.

Undrafted winger Ryan Hayes has left Boston College to join Plymouth of the OHL, where he has 12 points in 12 games.

In less happy news, Nate Davis, Logan MacMillan, Robin Figren and Max Gratchev have all had to deal with significant injuries this season, top goalie Leland Irving has been very average, and other Mountain Due hopefuls have fallen off the mark as well. Most annoyingly, Nikolai Kulemin - who had 27 goals and 39 points in the RSL last season (when I *didn't* have a Mountian Due endorsement) - fell back slightly this season, putting up 19 goals and 28 points, two shy of the endorsement payout. With the way this season has gone, I was counting on Kulemin's payout to refund my $1 million investment - now it looks like I can kiss that cash goodbye. Here's to hoping St. Louis can score 40 for me in the HFNHL, otherwise this endorsement season is a complete bust! :help:

I haven't tracked down stats yet on how Euro goaltenders Tuomas Tarkki and Reto Berra are doing in their respective leagues. Tarkki led the SM-Liiga last season in virtually every stat, while Berra is just getting his feet wet as a backup with Davos in Swiss-A. If anyone has up-to-date stats (or scouting reports) on these two, I'd appreciate it!

*EDIT* - Found Tarkki's stats... first in the SM-Liiga with a 93.7 save%, and second in gaa with 2.01, just behind Bernd Bruckler's 1.97.
