Was hoping to listen to 3 in the key and it's not up yet. I hope someone at the station reads this. I also hope they don't axe that show because i think they do a really good job.

Took the radio program with Elias. He's a good guy. Funny guy. He works hard and does a good job with that show.

Caught the last part of the drive today. I just want to thank Ian, Lee and everyone at the station for how they handled today’s news. I thought it was a good idea to open the phone lines and let the fans speak on the news of the day. Also, want to give a shoutout to those people who did phone in. I can’t disagree with any of the points made in the calls I heard.

Yup. Ian, you're the man. That's exactly what the fans/listeners needed today.

But, there was something that got on my nerves a little bit. I absolutely can't stand the "Sportscentre Updates." Do you really need to drop two in the same hour? My drive home went like this: I get in the car a little after 5, listen to some commercials, then BOOM--Sportscentre Update! Followed by some discussion and then a few excellent callers, commercial, and then they come back for like a 3 minute segment where they take one caller while teasing ANOTHER Sportscentre Update (already?). My biggest criticism of the show is that there's barely any show. I get that it's AM radio and you have to sell a lot of ads but there's obviously some time to be gained, and scrapping an SC update would be a great way to start. I don't mean to be an a-hole cause I know Ian is a true pro and preps for every show, but it just feels like the all the show consists of is intros and teases. There's never enough time to get a good segment going. Sometimes I get into my car to go somewhere and hear nothing but commercials for the entire trip. That's why I've started to download the Toronto Overdrive podcast and listen to it via aux chord while I'm driving.

Not necessarily directed at the radio hosts etc, but are these type of stories (Hoff & Lee) normally broken by non sports media? The last two monster pieces of Sens news which have somewhat transcended the sport and nothing from the beat guys who are "connected/insiders/plugged in"? What gives here it's baffling to me that I heard about the Hoffman thing for example 2-3 weeks ago and no media person did?

This one's really easy to explain: both issues were grounded more in the legal domain than the sports domain. Relevant to the sports landscape, of course, but neither story gets broken without the legal aspects clearly laid out. That's where the Buffalo writer and Shaamini Yogaretnam come in – they have more contacts and more experience dealing with the court system. Hell, the Karlsson-Hoffman story came out because of the filing for a peace bond.

From my understanding the info was easy to get and publicly available and both story breakers were lower level journalists, I was assuming a professional sports journalist once notified of the rumour would know the proper avenues to pursue to acquire the proof.

Having worked with Shaamini, I can confirm that she's not only NOT a lower level journalist, but also one of the most hard-working crime reporters in the city. Can't comment on the Buffalo writer though.

EDIT: And come to think of it, I'd imagine a lot of sport reporters hear these type of rumours frequently but have to use their judgment on what to report/not report in order to keep working relationships. Less concern for that from non-sports reporters. Possible they may have been tipped off by the sportswriters, though.

Gotta sau, I took a good break from TSN1200 after the season, got brought back in when Randy Lee showed the world the Ottawa Senators organization reflect the maturity of the owner.

1200 is doing a great job these days. Their job when you get down to it is to sell the Sens and Redblacks to the Ottawa community. That’s a hard ask right now and I’m sure they wake up everyday like we do thinking what could be next. Not easy watching the people you’ve built up for literally years watch themselves self destruct, but want to say good job 1200, coverage has been great all things considered

Don't kid yourselves, these guys can play stupid all they want, they knew what was going on. They just didn't have anything to prove the allegations were true, so no sense throwing it out there, people would have lost their minds.

ANOTHER Sportscentre Update

Yes, these happen far too often, and when Dean Roberts does them, sometimes they are actually longer than the segments on TGOR. Do one every hour at the most. These guys (minus Mendes) use Twitter for their show prep, so when something breaks, they are on it.

Probably just bad timing but...

Have turned on TSN1200 on three different occassions today, each time they weren't talking about the Ottawa Senators. Actually talking about their fantasy football league right now.

Obviously flipped to TSN690 each time today and all 3 times they were talking about the disfunctional Ottawa Senators.

Nah it's not bad timing, the organization gives them stories to talk about on a silver platter and they will find a way to f*** it up. Enjoyed the Drive yesterday with Ian though,

I agree 100% with this, minus Versage though.

Also, does the station have so much trouble finding quality guests that they feel the need to have Macramella on every show? I know he is a "legal expert", but cmon now folks!

Been a long time radio listener in Ottawa and been fairly critical of the way the local sports radio landscape has been, particularly TGOR. I think Ian Mendes with his openness particularly in these forums has been refreshing and has endeared him to die hard fans like very few others in the Ottawa media.

Something else did happen though - since the Sens (melnyk et al) called out the "media" during the town halls, Steve and JR have become much more on point. Steve mentioned the media shot that the Sens took again today, and they both have become much more critical of what's obviously blatant mismanagement of the Sens.

TSN1200 - you are one of our only outlets - continue to represent the people truthfully and honestly.

What they should have been talking about is the World Cup.

You could do exactly what you just said with the local radio station. Maybe it works for me since I'm in a different time zone but even when I was in Ottawa, I basically only downloaded the TSN1200 podcasts and listened to those. Yes I'd be a few hours late but that didn't really matter to me, I just wanted good content to listen to on my drives. The podcasts are commercial free and you can see from the descriptions what they discuss in that hour or listen specifically to a guest they have on the show. SO much more efficient and as such I usually don't have the usual complaints ppl on here have. Don't listen to TGOR, or pick and choose exactly what hour to listen to (I only ever play the Pierre Mcguire hour if I ever listen to TGOR, the drive is by far the best show).

I find it funny that they've been advertising criminal defense lawyers lately. Specialists in domestic abuse cases, no less. Nice demographic we got here.

So what’s with these rumours that Duthie is floating - come on Ottawa sports media, if people in Toronto know, you guys must know. You know all this, get us this information.

I don’t understand what you guys are waiting for? This Hoffman rumour could of easily been a sports reporter find, let’s go.

We assume you work to inform the fans and not to tell stories fed to you by the Sens organization. By not reporting this stuff directly to us it makes you guys look like Sens company men, why stay silent on a team that is desperate to have a bright light shown into every corner of its rotten workings.

The only way we buy back in and restore faith is with total honesty of the clubs workings and full exposure and that comes from you guys. Get to work.
