@DaveG
Why don't West Virginia and Marshall play each other anymore?
Short story? They have a 38K stadium that they don't come anywhere close to selling out aside from when WVU plays there, and the stadium in those games is at least 60-40 WVU, yet they insist on home and home or nothing. WVU has a stadium that holds around 60K that sells out regularly. WVU also plays a bare minimum of 1 and usually 2 other P5 schools OOC. It just makes more sense for them to go the route of inviting (insert regional FCS program here) to play a payday game in Morgantown than it does to ever accept a 1 for 1.
It goes a lot deeper then this but this is basically a good primer for it.
For reference, here's WVU's OOC slates:
2018 - Tennessee*, vs Youngstown State, @NCSU (canceled due to Florence)
2019 - vs JMU, @ Missouri, vs NCSU
2020 - FSU*, vs Eastern Kentucky, vs Maryland
2021 - @ Maryland, vs Indiana St, vs Virginia Tech
2022 - @ Pitt, @ Virginia Tech, TBA
2023 - @ Ped State, vs Duquesne, vs Pitt
2024 - vs Ped State, @Pitt, TBA
and there's one more home vs Pitt scheduled some time after that (probably 2025)
* = neutral site
I mean, it's basically like if Troy was insisting they get a home and home with Auburn/Bama, or FIU insisting they get a home and home with FSU/Florida/Miami
