No. Get another coach on the bench. Get a PP consultant. And get some damn heart

Heart. Heartheartheart.

I see such a lack of it. It reminds me of the dark days all over again. The talent is there; the effort and brains are not.

QFMFT I've been preaching this all god damned year.

Dude doesn't even need to be on the bench. I know Torts hates having "too many coaches in the players' ears." Okay, that's fine. You dedicate the last 20 minutes of practice to PP and let this new 'consultant' do his thing.

And you know what he does during the game? He sits his ass in front of a video screen with Jerry Dineen, and they watch the game. He breaks down what he sees, and makes (get this) IN GAME ADJUSTMENTS!

This is a fixable issue. If the power play was going tonight, the Rangers would have taken a 1-0 lead to start and it'd have been a whole different ballgame.

No Way Torts gets fired at this point. He has this season to sink or swim. They can't replace him with anyone for this season.

With that said, many of our problems have been due to systemic issues. Torts has to take some of the blame, no way around it.

Our transition has always been a major problem for this team, including last year.

There is no point to even bring up the powerplay, its that bad.

Not saying I think he should be fired, but he can at times be incredibly frustrating. He needs to critique the system because of the new players we have. This isn't the same team

I did a little bit of 'research.' Research is in quotes because it's not that in-depth. But I threw this up on my blog tonight...

Maybe it's time to check back in the timeline of John Tortorella coached teams and their power play production:

12/13 Rangers: 8.6% currently 30th in the league.
11/12 Rangers: 15.7% 23rd
10/11 Rangers: 16.9% 18th
09/10 Rangers: 18.3% 13th
08/09 Rangers (Torts in place for half the season: 13.9% 29th

07/08 Lightning: 19.3% 5th
06/07 Lightning: 18.4% 9th
05/06 Lightning: 16.7% 23rd

(no need to go pre-lockout in this analysis)

Torts' two best years came in Tampa. Looking at the 07/08 season, Torts' best, his players included guys like Vinny Lecavalier (10g, 19a), Martin St. Louis (10g, 19a), Brad Richards (traded to Dallas after 62 games) (9g, 16a), Dan Boyle (played only 37 games) (2g, 12a), Vinny Prospal (traded to Philadelphia after 62 games) (9g, 8a), and Filip Kuba (2g, 9a) - In a season that would see the Lightning finish with a 31-42-9 record.

It's important to note, that Mike Sullivan was only an assistant with Tortorella during the 07/08 campaign.

Torts has had 5 "down" years on the PP since the first lockout. Four of them have come during his time with the Rangers.

Sather has tried to bring in the players on the ice that Torts has wanted. He's brought in both Brad Richards and Vinny Prospal to try and recapture some of that Lightning, but it has not been able to come together. Now with firepower including the likes of Nash, Gaborik, and Torts' beloved Richards, there is no excuse for the Rangers power play to be losing their games. There's no reason for me wondering if the NHL would consider implementing a rule that would allow the team going on the power play to choose if they could run their power play, or just run 2 minutes off of the clock. The latter would be more fitting for the Rangers of late, considering they tend to give up more chances than they can generate.

If it's up to Torts if he wants to hire a PP coach and decides not to and we continue to lose, I'd fire the **** out of him.

What makes some of you think there are just all these "powerplay specialists" out there for the hiring? What makes you think fixing a PP is that simple and that coach dependent? Why do any other teams struggle on the PP? Why do other good teams struggle on the PP?

I'd love to hear the crazies answer these questions.

We have the ability to be a puck possession hockey team, but we rely too much on a system that is fit for lineups that have a meat and potatoes type players. Get an assistant from Detroit asap.

THIS team is suffering from a lack of camp/preseason. Too much turnover to expect them to hit the ground running.

gotta hope they figure things out quick

Too soon man. If the Rangers don't make the playoffs, he's gone. If they lose in the first or second round then start 2013-14 at the bottom of the division he's out. Otherwise he's got til the end of next season before Slats would make a move

You're right. If a power play genius was out there sure enough he'd be locked up by another team by now. I'm saying, it doesn't even have to be a genius, it could be a fresh mind with a fresh eye looking at it and figuring it out.

You could do something as basic as having Brian Leetch come into practice one day to work with Del Zotto, Richards, Stepan, and Stralman - guys who play the point on the PP.

They did it last year with Messier and faceoffs, why not this year with Leetch and the PP? I'm not saying it's going to automatically make everything roses and daisies, but enough is enough at this point, something needs to change.

"we don't play scared hockey"...huh?
what do you call putting the shackles on elite level offensive players and forcing them to play dump and chase?

"we are the better team 5-5"...really? for a period perhaps.
if you cant score more than 2 goals, you're probably losing, that's the reality.

Its not just the PP. In fact, I think its just another symptom.

The main problem for this team has been our transitional play. Torts overuses the stretch pass to the point of stupidity.

This has been issue for the past two years. Its also one of the biggest complaints that lightning fans had with him when he was still in Tampa.

Torts is obsessed with trying to stretch the opposing teams defense. However, when those defenders adjust and play static on their blue line-the man keeps sticking to his useless breakouts.

This. I like Torts but I feel he's being stubborn by not letting the team open up a bit.

too soon for this. if we miss the playoffs this year i think he should definitely be fired. but we most likely will make the postseason and if we have an early exit (i would fire him) he should be on the hot seat next year.

basically no ECF this year and i would can him. but im not a torts guy so that's just my opinion.

Who's out there that's better than him? If we're going to have a serious conversation about this, what's the short list?
