I think everybody can agree that Gomez is our first buyout. Do the Habs buyout Kaberle or Bourque with the second?

Bourque's contract extends 2 years beyond Kaberle's but he fills (at least theoretically) the greater need--big, scoring winger.

Kaberle's contract is up at the end of next season but we do have an awful lot of d-men hanging around.

Do the Habs keep them both or cut one free?

My vote goes to Bourque who has really shown very little during his short tenure with the Habs. He's one of those guys who seem to wear out his welcome with every team he's on--even when scoring 25-30 goals a season. Without the goal-scoring, he's toast.

I'm very glad the Habs have this half season to evaluate who has aged worse between the two, to test Markov's health (in case they need Kaberle on the top PP unit) and to try to get a trade or two done.

So by looking at that, Bourque and Gomez are the two worst for us. Gomez has high value for 2 years and Bourque has a lot of small values. Kaberle, unless he really sucks, shouldn't be bought out since he will only have one more year left.

I guess everything depends on what UFA we will try and sign or how tight the budget is next year.


edit: But the reason I show the value is because in case we need to buy out 3 due to them sucking and needed cap space for better assets. I believe Kaberle won't be bought out on a compliance buyout since he is the most useful (at least last year, who knows this year) and has the better contract of the 3.

Kaberle makes more sense I think, Bourque has a longer contract BUT a nice salary should he return to 25-25 form.

Bourque is a good power forward which we have always wanted and the guy can fight and protect his teammates. I really don't understand why we would move him after barely giving him a chance

Even on a terrible season Bourque still scored 17 goals.

If he's bought out he'll be signed asap. Whichever team does get him will laugh at us.

People wanting to buy Bourque out after a bad half season here where most of the team sucked just proves how fickle fans really are.

Kaberle can be dealt to a team who needs to get over the cap. Plus he ****ing suck defensively.

I'd let them play the current season, and decide afterwards.

I'm inclined to say Kabs, as he'll have some value, AND, his probably the easiest to replace (we don't have much prospects in the Bourque mold).

Another observation: In the rush to rid the team of Gomez and his absurd salary, Habs' fans have not really noticed that the 2-buyout provision of the new CBA actually hurts the Habs more than it helps.

Gomez' deal, however difficult to stomach, is by far the team's worst contract. It expires at the end of next season.

Other teams are saddled with deals that extend into the 22nd century (Luongo, Lecavalier, Redden and many others). These teams are getting let of a much larger, more painful hook than the Habs.

Those numbers don't matter. These two buyouts won't touch the cap. The only thing that matters is their contracts and salary.

Yes but he was a solid player for the Flames. Maybe the trade shocked him or he didn't feel comfortable after the trade but he has proved he can play and score in this league. I would personally hang on

Redden deal expires at the end of last season as well. And TB won't buyout Lecavalier.
