I used to have something like that in my apartment back in the day, albeit not quite 1.5 million. Then my wife and I bought a house and some lines were drawn

So you made the garage her she-shed, good move! If you really want peace & quiet, just split up the house a la War of the Roses, but with visiting hours by appt.

Why in Odins name do you have 5 other cars?

And I know that you can't evade state sales tax by living in Washington and buying in Oregon. Is that loophole closed for all states?

Every state I have lived in....

6 cars:
project car (not driveable)
convertible
daily beater
hunting vehicle soon to be junked due to rust
replacement hunting vehicle (fixing seals right now)
my dad's X5 that I inherited that I rarely drive

I think this is an interesting discussion but it's out of place in a Frans thread so I'm just tagging you guys here so we can keep talking about it.

Ya I get that but the prices for used have went through the roof anyways plus unless your paying cash financing on new is 0% and 5.4 for used so really my payment could be higher

Cars are a waste of money, and I say that even though I'm an automotive engineer and own 6 cars (lol). Just drive it until the wheels fall off (and I've actually had that happen to me). Prices aren't gonna come back down for a couple of more years.

Note: We've moved the car talk to the OT thread

And speaking of OT, I caught a pink salmon today. Not much salmon in the rivers yet.

How do you like the X5? I've been debating getting a new car for a few months now and I've been looking pretty hard at the BMW X4 and X6 models (the sportier versions of the X3 and X5 with basically the same interiors) but keep talking myself out of it because my current car is paid off.

I had the wheel fall off my first car (a ford escort beater) going over a train track. Had someone rig it back together with bolts through the body of the car somehow. I miss that ol girl.

My first car was a 1982 dodge aries that I bought for $500. The car lasted me for a solid 3 weeks before the passenger side floorboard completely fell out. I put some plywood over the hole and the car lasted another week before the engine took a crap. I do NOT miss that car.

The one I bought after that was a 1993 Dodge shadow from my idiot cousin. He did some "custom" exhaust work and replaced the catalytic converter with a straight through pipe. I took a closer look at it when I was changing the oil one day and I'm pretty sure he just used a piece of fence post and some sealing putty around the exhaust manifold. Somehow that car ran for like 15 years after I bought it in 2005 and it's been passed around to my other idiot cousins like a family heirloom.

It's nice but not really my thing. I drive my X5 less than 2k miles per year, but the 2001 Focus gets 15k.

Get a first gen Focus hatchback from a rust-free state. It's like the Escort except better handling, and you can find one for less than $2k easily. One of the easiest cars to fix, I've had mine completely apart, and I also stripped a parts car.

We're trying to move the car talk to the OT thread...

Anyways, only 2 of the cars (BMW X5 and Mercedes 560SL) are nice, the rest are all beaters though 2 of them were purchased new.

Other than my wife's Escalade, I don't think any of mine are conventionally nice.:laugh: Although, I do have a somewhat clean unicorn 1991 Dodge Spirit R/T with something like 75k that rarely comes out of the garage.

The rest are just beaters, project cars or a combination of the two.

As for the first car discussion, mine was a turbo AWD 1993 Eagle Talon that I still own 18 years later...

I've only ever had one vehicle in my life. 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. Good ol' Black Beauty. One rollover, two turkeys, and three deer later she still kicking. Coming up on 20 years of getting me from point A to Point B. Has had the same CD stuck in the CD player since 2011 (Taylor Swift).

Gearheads, thoughts on CVT transmissions? Mine failed going over the Rockies on a trip to Seattle. Most mechanics I talked to won’t touch or recommend them

CVTs in some cars are trash. I found out 3 days after I bought a Nissan Altima that the 2010 to 2014 models don't come standard with a transmission radiator. I ended up melting the transmission valve body on mine from driving through Utah and Wyoming on a road trip back to Michigan. The car would drop from 70mph to 35mph without notice due to the transmission overheating. I almost caused an accident on a mountain when that happened while driving up hill and the traffic behind me had to swerve out of the way.

I ended up in a major fight with the dealership and the warranty company over who was going to pay for it because fixing the trans and adding an after-market radiator to it was $3000. The Nissan dealership (that I didn't buy the car from) were great about it and fought the warranty company for me and got the part installed.

In short, I'm never buying a Nissan again and I'm never buying a car from Auto Nation again. Avoid CVTs.

My first car that I bought (title in my name, not my parents) was a '94 4.0L Ranger 4x4 short cab short bed. Factory ordered. I loved it but it rusted out. The truck was built for snow, and unfortunately that means salt.

Because they suck. Automated manual transmissions are very durable in semi trucks, but Ford managed to mess that up too with their Powershift transmission. I don't recommend any domestic auto transmission despite having worked for 2 of them. CVT are the worst, regardless of domestic or foreign, even the Japanese can't build them to last.

Manual transmission, speed match on downshifts, and you'll never have to worry about transmission issues.

Burn the whole freakin' car. And make sure you do it on the Lodge Freeway because that's where cars always catch on fire for some reason.
