HockeyIntangibles: The Next Step in Kadri's Evolution

Nazem Kadri has come a long way since joining the team full time 6 seasons ago. Kadri was drafted as a one dimensional offensive minded player that was undersized. He never really gelled with former Leafs coach Ron Wilson but did get a break later with Randy Carlyle.....

Happy Monday :)

Man his development has had it's ups and downs but he's a great player that was fully developed in Toronto. I still remember that draft, I thought for sure he'd be a one dimensional guy too.

P.S. the link doesn't work.

Always weird to think back to his early days and how he was handled.

He was a PKer in junior and always competed hard. This idea that he was a lazy scorer was bizarre and seemed to be Wilson's way of keeping his ego in check and defending the team's decision to return him to junior/Marlies.

There's no doubt he could have (and did) improve defensively, but it seemed like they just wasted time with him.

It did seem like they were treading water with him at some point in his development, not sure what the moment was that turned around for him or if he was just developing properly and we couldn't tell.

Some questionable off ice habits with Lupul were part of the equation but I think proper attention from Babcock and a more professional environment courtesy of Lou helped.

Good article just noticed a small typo you might want to fix in the 7th paragraph...

A strong two-way centre that can penalty kill fills a huge need for the Leafs and Kadri is just the right to player to fill the void. The fact the Leafs can look internally to fill this void is massive

Think Kadri would be fine as a PKer, but wouldn't be surprised if the 4C is more likely to fill that role if Babcock utilizes a full-time centre there, with Hyman, Brown and Kapanen as the other PKers. Great that Kadri's going to be a 3C in title only, as that C depth is tremendous on paper and should translate just as well on the ice.

I think his next step is really a continuation of his progress since Babcock came on board. He will move even closer to becoming a top defensive player and PK specialist.

The new NHL won't tolerate more of Kadri over-aggressiveness.
He needs to be careful.

I'd love to see him do well on the PK.

We have two Centres for the PP.

I think Babcock wears off players pretty fast. Sheldon Keefe just won a championship, I think Dubas will entreaty MLSE to hire him and send Babcock down to the AHl. Where he belongs, he can swear all he wants behind the bench and collect the big pay.

Mike Babcock turned him into the player he is today, but Randy Carlyle gave him the kick in the ass he needed to salvage his career

I think that's about right.

Naz needed to mature a little, and he was at the right age to receive the message when it came. Worked out perfectly for us.

I think he also needed some time to develop his game - some guys come up totally ready for the NHL, some guys need more time. He's improved every year - kinda too bad for him that despite improving, he's been bumped down by the arrival of AM and JT. Kinda good for us though....

Wilson was just an idiot. Carlo Colaiacovo broke his foot blocking a shot, and when asked about the injury, Wilson tore into him saying it's a because he's fat and out of shape. Then he was promptly traded along with Steen for Lee Stempniak.

His next step will be taking a step back. He is at his peak right now and he needs to play with edge but stop taking it too far. He will likely be on the Ice less and have reduced production.

What's with you and the coach swearing? You know all coaches, players, and basically most people, swear, right?

It's not like they'll replace him with a coach that doesn't swear...

Pretty much, and I don't say think this is a knock on Kadri. He's getting major downgrades in linemates and offensive opportunities with two lines ahead of him instead of one. If he can still throw up 20/20/40 and be a bastard to play against, that's still a stellar #3 C.
