I think that's pretty much exactly how I would rank OHLers too.

I'm glad O'Rourke is getting some love. I feel like he has a good chance to be the first defenseman taken after Drysdale and Sanderson. He and Schneider are just better hockey players than Guhle, IMO, and I think he's very similar to Schneider, but with quite a bit more offensive potential.

Not really related to this draft, but watched the 2014 NHL draft again. Draisaitl looked like a beast even at 18 years old. Thicc kid.

Prince Albert played against the Oil Kings in the playoffs of Drai’s draft year, and I remember thinking the same thing seeing him on the ice. Just had a massive frame, it was easy to envision him matching up against the Kopitar/Thornton/Getzlaf’s of the Pacific. That series solidified him as the guy I wanted at #3.

I remember thinking the same thing. He dominated juniors but convinced most scouts (and myself) that his foot speed would have to improve significantly to be successful. Boy did he ever.

I think that's the biggest mistake scouts make. They find reasons why a player wont make it despite producing. Every year we hear about how a guy is too slow, too weak, too small, too lazy or overweight. The thing is, these guys have always had to overcome these shortcomings and continue to produce despite their drawbacks.

In many ways this is why I think Seth Jarvis is being overlooked. He has the production (2nd in the WHL) but scouts have made up their mind that he is a perimeter player or the bounces just went his way. Scouts had the same issue with Eberle's shooting percentage sustainably and he continued to score for us. A guy like Kessel will never have the body of "an athlete". A guy like Doughty was bored and just needed to be challenged, not lazy.

Truth is we dont know how these guys will adapt to become NHLers. With Seth Jarvis I see a guy who just continues to get better and last time this year wasnt on anyone's radar. Maybe he finds an extra gear to blow past guys or becomes a better passer when drawing guys in.

Never underestimate guys who produce. Especially when they arent exactly the product of someone else.

O’Rourke is a first rounder easily for me. Underrated because his defense overshadows his offense, but he’s not without offensive ability.

100% he should be a first rounder. I really dont get it. Most scouting agencies have like 5-6 dmen ranked in the 1st round.

Yet we consistently see at least 10-12 dmen drafted in the 1st round every year. Dmen are a commodity and NHL teams like to swing on them.

What are your thoughts on Justin Barron? I have him in my 1st as well.

HockeyProspect released their draft rankings.

Notable rankings:
  • Stutzle at 2
  • Perfetti at 4
  • Sanderson, Quinn, and Jarvis at 4, 5, and 6
  • Raymond, Rossi, and Holtz, at 8, 9, and 10
  • Drysdale at 12, 3rd defenseman off the board
  • Robins at 13, Greig at 14
  • Brisson at 19, Evangelista at 21
  • Samuel Johanesson, an overager, at 31

Some really unusual rankings, not that it's a bad thing. I have yet to see any two lists from major outlets that are similar in the slightest. Every ranking differs wildly from the others.

I've got no idea what to expect the draft to look like this year. I have a feeling we'll see a lot more "reaches" than usual.

Agreed on Barron...he’s behind O’Rourke but a first rounder in my books.

As to your first point, I don’t rank players based on how history expects a draft to go...I just use my own judgement and make my list....win some and lose some. I think I have 7 with a first round ranking but only 3 top 20.

Agreed.

Which three defensemen do you have in your top-20? I have Drysdale, Schneider, and Sanderson, with Wallinder just missing the cut.

I think I’d have Drysdale, Sanderson and O’Rourke in my 1st. Maybe Schneider and Grans too sneaking in near the end of the round.

Wallinder seems like more of a second round home run swing to me. Not a fan of Guhle and the guys from the Q.

My 1st round D-rankings are:

Drysdale
Sanderson
Schneider
Wallinder
O'Rourke

I'm still debating whether I should drop Guhle from #31.

Drysdale and Rossi too low imo

I've been joking about him because of his name, but what would you think about Connor McClennon as a pick if he slipped to the 4th because of size/injury?

Seems like a potential Yamo-type player.

Definitely the kind of guy I’d like to see taken with a later pick. Local kid with a high pedigree coming into the WHL who’s been held back a bit by injuries. If he can stay healthy could be great pick. Unfortunately we don’t have a 4th from the Green trade.

McClennon is more of a shooter than Yamo and not quite as tenacious (then again, who is?). His skating is good but needs improvement if he's going to translate his game to the NHL. Nice shot, hands, and agility though, and the name certainly adds value.

He's an immediate pick if he lasts to the 4th — which I doubt — and I'd even take a look at him with our 3rd.

Unfortunately we don’t have a 4th from the Green trade.
I believe we keep the 4th this year if we advance to the conference finals and Green plays ≥50% of the games. Then the Wings would get our 3rd next year.

At our current draft slot I think Ridly Grieg is a bit of a reach, but man would he be a great piece to add. Lots of people think his offense is limited and he will top out as a third liner, but put in the right situation I think he can become a heck of a complimentary piece. He’s an agitator, physical, and gets to scoring areas. Of the forwards in this draft I’m not sure there is a more physical one. Very much a Dustin Brown type of player(when Dustin Brown was still good).

Agreed. Ditto with Jake Neighbours.

It would be nice to have a 2nd this year.
